Fire is the Moon Serpent's weakness. With fire as your weapon, you may fight it as:

The darkness disappears as the Serpent dies. You watch it lying on the ground and, before your eyes, it shrivels, coiling into a ball. Moments later, all that remains is a small Crystal Orb, which you may take with you.

You walk for several hours until a sight makes you stop.

A few hundred yards ahead of you is a camp of covered wagons and carts, arranged in a circle. A fire burns in the centre, and you can see bodies moving around the camp. You walk towards the caravan. Your approach is noticed and an arrow flies through the air, landing to your left. Another lands to your right.

Hold your hands in the air to show that you mean no harm?
Retrace your steps and take a wide detour around the camp?

You hold your arms up in the air and walk slowly forward. To your relief, no more arrows are released, although you can see bowmen, with shafts at the ready, covering your approach. A crowd is gathering to see who you are and you are soon close enough to make out what sort of people are watching you. You have come across a caravan of Black Elves, presumably traders of some kind. As you enter the camp, they eye you suspiciously. An old Elf, slightly stouter than the rest, steps forward. 'If you seek shelter or food,' he starts, 'then you waste your time with this caravan. What purpose have you wandering alone through the Baklands?' What will your reply be?

Claim to be a trader and ask to see their wares?
Tell him of your mission and ask about the Seven Serpents?
Say you are after food and shelter and you will pay handsomely for their hospitality?

Eyebrows rise and the Elves look at one another at the thought that you might be carrying Gold. 'Our pardon, noble traveller,' says the old Elf. 'We mistook you for a vagabond. We are always happy to offer our hospitality to those who can afford the price. Such is our business. Come, let me show you to the kitchen tent where you may eat and we may exchange news of the outside world. It is just beyond that tent.' You follow him across the camp, with the rest of the Elves following several paces behind and muttering to themselves.

Buying food wins 1.5 to 0.5.

The Whortle soup is hot and nourishing. It is a creamy-grey vegetable soup. It sometimes has a strange effect on people who have not eaten it before. Roll one die; the result is 6 and something happens.

You feel hot and prickly all over. The old Elf laughs at your discomfort. You are breaking out in red blotches all over your body! 'Don't worry,' he chuckles. 'This sometimes happens if you have not taken Whortle soup before. But the effects are merely temporary.' The other Elves are also laughing at your predicament. 'Cook!' he shouts. 'What say we give our friend a Gold Piece for the aggravation?' The cook agrees and hands you a Gold Piece.

After the soup, a plate of bread and runny cheese is brought to you. The smell is awful! But with all eyes on you, you force down the stuff and wash away the taste with the herb tea. Gloister is a strange, cheese-like substance, which has the power to restore Luck. Restore your Luck to its initial level, and restore 2 Stamina points as this is your first Meal today. The old Elf orders another cup of herb tea and the two of you chat, with the others looking on.

Try to amuse them by telling them jokes?
Tell them you are tired and would like to rest for the night?
Ask to see their wares if, as it appears, they are traders?

You hope that a couple of jokes will make them less hostile to you. Your favorite jokes are Goblin jokes, as Goblins are well-known for their stupidity. You ask the old Elf why the Goblin wedding cake was made out of Skunkbear dung. He shrugs. You tell him: to keep the flies off the bride! The tent bursts into uproarious laughter, and the old Elf, with tears streaming from his eyes, claps you on the back. You tell them the one about the Goblin who never learned to spell his own name--because he thought only wizards could spell! Again, laughter resounds around the tent. You are the star of the show and the Elves' mischievous looks have now turned to friendly smiles.

Ask to visit their store to see if they have anything to buy or trade for?
Ask for a place to rest for the night?
