There was a story awhile ago, where they talked about how all of the "shithole" countries were now refusing entry to Americans. Oh how the turn tables...

OgreBattle wrote:So is China lying about their numbers now
Almost certainly.

China was lying about their numbers before they faced collapse in Wuhan so hard that the first country to report human to human spread of SARSCOV2 was Taiwan. They literally went full men-in-black denial for like 2 months until they were forced to lock down a city the size of Chicago or London and other countries were already reporting the spread of the deadly plague. Once they seemed to get the pestilence under control, or at least mostly under control, they kicked foreign reporters and scientists out of the country and went dark again.

The period of China being, or even pretending to be a good global citizen lasted from the point when they needed outside help to the point where they no longer did. That's it. Every time before and after the point of being completely prostrate they have chosen to lie and conceal the extent of their problem.

But of course, it's entirely possible that the US has bigger numbers even so. The official total of cases in the US is higher than it is in China, and while the official death toll isn't higher yet, it soon will be. And that's with the Trump administration actively sandbagging the data collection to "keep the numbers down."

But it's likely that we will never actually know how many COVID deaths there were in the PRC, not even to an order of magnitude. I'm already seeing people make conspiracy theories out of the fact that China trimmed unused mobile numbers for future reuse (that is, they dis-assigned 21 million mobile numbers that people had stopped using over the past decade). Obviously many of those mobile numbers belonged to people that are still alive and just have a different mobile carrier, and also too many of those phone plans were discontinued years in the past. But the PRC is so shady about their record keeping that the "21 million deaths" conspiracy theory is already taking off. In thirty years, you will have historians arguing death numbers in the tens of thousands and the tens of millions, both with a completely straight face and with neither being considered crankish.

Found this from reddit, thought it was helpful in visualizing the numbers of the US relief package:

There's none. We live in the age of the internet and smartphones with cameras and VPNs, if there were millions of bodies in China from COVID-19, then you can bet there would be trending photos and videos of it in the net over the last months.

Also Japan reveals the secret behind their low infection rate:

A recent video from Nanjing's current situation made by a japanese and uploaded to youtube. Notice the complete lack of piles of millions of bodies anywhere.

Allow me to introduce you to the concept of a PotemkinVillage. There is absolutely no doubt that there are places in China where the plague has been stamped out. This is highly credible. China is a big place, and they did a lot of effort on the response in some places, so it's not particularly surprising that it worked and worked well in some places.

China also has a long history of giving people guided tours of the "best parts" according to whatever the current national narrative happens to be. The fact that foreigners in general and foreign reporters in particular are very much not allowed to see anything in China that the central committee has cleared for them to see, and that excludes most of the country is what we call a "tell."

I would say it's pretty obvious the death toll is higher than they are admitting to. But I don't know if it's higher by a few thousand or a few tens of thousands.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I don't think I'm aware of a country who isn't lying about their numbers, hiding them by doing no regular testing, or just has no idea what the numbers are. So, probably?

The thing is, the Chinese have Internet and the Party can't completely stamp out massive popular indignation there. Chinese censorship works on subjects that the majority of their public is already predisposed to not care about and so I don't think the CCP could successfuly suppress their people from being outraged about a rampant epidemy in their big cities. Or at very least, that CCP cannot do so without the rest of the world noticing.

In local news, Bolsonaro keeps aping Trump: He's saying that this whole situation is overblown, said that for "almost everybody" covid19 would be "just like a little cold" and urged Brazil to resume normal life starting next week, while most state governors and his own health minister insist on a shut down for the time being.

To wit, Rio and São Paulo are overcrowded metropolises with a public health system that was already over-capacity and underfunded without a raging pandemic going on. Pensions for retired people are low, so it's common for people to share housing with their parents (and sometimes grandparents). Brazilians are gregarious as fuck and people are still not taking the quarentine seriously as of yesterday. Furthermore, a significative part of our populations live in favelas, which you can google about and figure by yourself how easy would be to a infectious disease to spread on.

So, I think we have a perfect storm brewing here and we seem to be in a New York-like trajectory with things as they currently stand. Take care, everybody.

Cuomo is currently trying to cut Medicaid in the middle of a pandemic. He was trying to in January but had to back off, but apparently he's taking advantage of a crisis to cut Medicaid funding.

I was sort of hoping Bolsonaro would change his tune after he tested positive, but I guess no such luck.

BoJo also tested positive, so it's a good thing he's not in a country where years of Tory mismanagement have stretched the NHS to breaking point an- oh wait.

The thing of Bolsonaro testing positive has been disputed. I mean, I don't expect anything that comes out of his office to be true, so I don't really know whether he has it or not. BoJo kind of obviously had it on Wednesday when he stopped showing up for press conferences and named a successor, but didn't admit that he had it until Friday.

So we're getting reports of criminal gangs creating their own curfews in Rio favelas.
“We want the best for the population,” stated another message, “If the government does not have the capacity to fix it, organized crime will solve it.”
That is of course terrifying. But the socialist D&D player in me kind of wants that to be true. It's the kind of origin story of a revolutionary state that you'd write in a book.

The White House finally backs down on ignoring Michigan after Trump complained Governor Whitmer (or "the woman in Michigan" as he call her) wasn't appreciative of his efforts. It's fucked that he can ignore entire states if the governor hurts his feelings.
