Yes, people actually believe that bullshit.

Yes, some people in Congress actually believe that bullshit.
While I do believe that there are a bunch of people in Congress who 'do' want to do right by the people a cursory look at how the creation and attempts to institute this healthcare repeal (that they know harms poor people) do not support your vision.

People are really good at excusing themselves for "unintended" consequences while crediting themselves for intended consequences. So they feel proud of themselves from saving those tax dollars from the nasty government and say "Well, what can you do?" when that hurts real people.

The premises are nonsense, though. Even before considering the fact that most Congresspeople, especially ones who write legislation for big business, are actually just making connections to leverage in the easier and better paying job as lobbyist they're hoping to get later, Congresspeople make six figures. They're close to $200,000 base salary. That's not the best paying job in the world, but it is sure as Hell enough to plausibly convince someone to go into it for the money.

The power wielded by even a Representative makes them one of the one or two thousand most politically important people in the country. It might pale in comparison to dictatorial control, but a congressperson obviously has far more power over national policy than the vast, vast majority of citizens. The only people with more or even similar amounts of power as congresspeople are the president, a few dozen top-level executive branch positions, the supreme court justices, and a handful of billionaires who mainly exercise power by finding technically legal ways to bribe congressmen, which feeds into how the pay is actually pretty damn good, above.

Of hyzmarca's list of three non-incentives, the only one that actually isn't an incentive is fame, because it's actually about as hard to become YouTube famous as it is to become a congressperson, and being YouTube famous means that you have like a million subscribers who know who you are and most of whom love you, whereas if you're a congressperson than probably only about 20% of your own state knows who you are (maybe 40% if you're a senator), and somewhere between 25% and 49% of those people hate you. Since the House of Representatives is divvied up by population, if you want fame, the only way to do better than YouTube is to become senator of a large state, a supreme court justice, or president. Supreme court justice is a completely different career path that most people in it for the fame aren't cut out for, president is a much bigger and more difficult accomplishment than becoming YouTube famous because there can be only one, and even if you move to Texas exclusively to become senator of 25 million people (five or six million of which will actually know your name and face if you're lucky), being YouTube famous would get you similar numbers but much less concentrated in Texas.

Money and power, though? Politics might not be the highest possible concentration of those, but if your primary talent is "get people to like and trust me," it could very easily be the highest concentration you can actually get. Being a New York doctor might pay better, but then you have to be a doctor.

tl;dr based on the timing, the federal government is probably issuing secret warrants to Facebook/Google/Twitter/etcetera against protesters.

(Unsurprising) Indications that the Republicans can't win an election without cheating and treason.

Also, the very (worst) problems put forward about Obamacare by it's detractors (saintly Insurance Companies will lose profits by paying amorally vile doctors to save the lives of inconsiderate patients!) don't seem to be true. In fact, it seems insurers are making profits.

That's not showing they need to cheat to win, merely that they are habitual cheats and will disenfranchise and conspire at every election.

McConnel delays recess to push through healthcare bill. Supposedly, we could see the next iteration of this travesty Thursday morning.

The Guardian accidentally published a picture that contained James Mattis's personal phone number. They removed the picture once they noticed this, but not before several people saw it, including a tenth grader working at a high school newspaper.

He called Mattis and asked for an interview. Mattis called him back and said yes.

http://mihsislander.org/2017/06/full-transcript-james-mattis-interview

I read this and think that all mainstream news organizations should just replace their reporters with tenth graders.

It's nice to see someone asking relevant questions instead of mining for soundbites.

Children would make terrible reporters; there's no way they could handle being bodyslammed by Republican congressmen.

They can be escorted by members of the wrestling team to deal with the bodyslams. The important thing is that they'd ask pertinent questions.

If Hillary had only done interviews for high school newspapers, people would have known what her policies actually were, instead of Benghazi, Emails, Emails, Benghazi, It's Her Turn.

Senate healthcare bill revealed. It contains an amendment from Cruz to offer cheaper, deregulated plans along side the ACA plans to win over conservatives. The problem, of course, is they could siphon off young and healthy customers, driving up prices on the plans that actually give you coverage, forcing others out, and... starting the death spiral.

Senate healthcare bill still lacks votes to pass

Like house bill, senators build in exemptions for themselves from their own shitty bill

Graham and Cassidy reveal an alternate senate healthcare bill

McConnel delays healthcare vote while McCain is out for a week recovering from surgery. There is a bit of irony about this piece of trash being held up by an unforeseen medical emergency.

Two more GOP senators came out against the healthcare bill, effectively killing it. Trump demanded a repeal now-replace later vote, which it looks like McConnel is going to attempt. It's doubtful that will pass. Now, Trump is blaming the democrats and calling to let the ACA fail. Of course, without his help, it doesn't seem to be failing.

If the republicans start blantantly fucking with the ACA to make it fail, will this cost them in future elections?

Probably, yes. The Republicans will try to spin it as Obamacare's flaws finally catching up with it, and it's possible that people will actually buy that since the Republican propaganda machine is so much stronger, but generally speaking when things go wrong people blame whichever party currently controls the White House.

People are dumb and blame the people in charge for everything that happens. This is sometimes good. This is sometimes bad. It is a very strong argument against having "elect the entire government all at once" elections.

Trump is almost certainly going to sabotage the healthcare system in every way he can, and Congress is not going to be able to amend the law to stop him. There's no way a positive revision to Obamacare makes it through the House. That is fucking impossible.

Republicans are going to try to spin Trump's sabotage as the inevitable collapse they're always prophesying and frame Democrats as obstructionists who won't let them fix it. Democrats are going to point out that Republicans are the ones who shit the bed and the only bill they actually want to pass is one that rubs your face in the newly browned sheets. Destroying the healthcare system is going to poll poorly. We already know obstruction doesn't poll poorly enough to matter.

McConnell's defeat speech might be the most Orwellian thing I've ever heard.

What's your favorite part? I particularly liked when he rebuked the Democrats for not working with the Republicans on a bill that he specifically excluded them from working on at all.

Looks like they might decide to opt for the French way of destroying public infrastructure: neglect it until it crashes and burn (either because its budget has regularly been "adjusted" by lowering it, or because it hasn't been kept up to date with changes in the society, or because private interests have found a way to abuse the system and nothing has been done to prevent them) then use this to justify cutting it down.

A curious US congressman questions NASA about ancient civilizations on the Red Planet. A Mars rover scientist offers a sensible answer.
