Moral Conflict w/Angels [3.P, Level 3]

Post by virgil »

A great general (15th level Marshall, essentially) gets caught by Elysium's entrapping trait, and was due to arrive on a Prime world to help lead the people in a war for survival against an invading force. Several refugees beseech the party, one of them being a PC, to ex-filtrate the general so he can have a procedure done to remove Elysium's hold on him.

I'm presuming a faction of celestials opposed to such action. After all, there should be a nominally 'good' code of ethics that can plausibly argue that such a quest is unequivocally evil, and must be hindered.

Are there any suggestions for what the party should face.

Well, assuming the rationalizations for the bullshit of both the procedure and the hostile angels are done, it's just a normal encounter with a CR appropriate to the party. Only instead of standard monsters, it would be rarely used shit with the good tag: whichever breeds of angels infest Elysium and whatever celestial servant critters they feel like picking up.

Seems pretty straightforward, given that you've provided none of the important or relevant details (party composition, level and how hard it should be).

Alternately they can go find someone else or be the someone else. If they've got planar access (read: infinite access), I've got fuck all idea why they'd give two shits about a specific marshal of any level.
Go to Sigil and hire some Mercykillers to counter-invade or something.

Level 3? Probably better hold back on the giant flying brain with a halo then.

Have an archway with dog statues on either side that get hostile when the party is trying to hustle a petitioner through

Have a weak celestial troll try to take away their weapons so they can embrace nonviolence

An ambush, they've got a major terrain advantage with clouds of smoke, blinding flashes, and layered entangle effects. Kind of hard to hit too. But they're offensively anemic, so the PCs should have plenty of time to figure out a solution.

It's a plane that brainwashes and entraps you. Having a rad boss fight against a half-celestial Elder Brain might be pretty thematic. Plus, you can get some pretty great mileage out of ranting about how lesser minds must be subsumed for the Greater Good.

Or maybe just channel Andross from Star Fox
