Vampire politics was an designed by a bunch of goths as an extension of goth scene politics. So its all about achieving dominance in personally conflicts with the small group of people who you actually have something in common with (in this case the supposedly soul-crushing ennui of being a vampire rather than being a goth) and therefore hang out with even if you actually hate their guts.

So the fact that they don't have something coherent to disagree about is actually by design. Its pure clique factionalism all the way down and the primary motives are envy and spite.

The big advantage of being Prince is that all the subordinate Vampires has to listen to you and pay attention to you and beg you for favors when they want to do stuff like open a night club or make someone a new vampire.

VtM politics operates on the level of What we Do in the Shadows (which, by the way, functions very effectively as a hilarious deconstruction of everything in VtM, especially the pretentiousness). It's the childish infighting of a bunch of morose schmucks who can never really change and therefore never get over anything, so it all goes round and round.

Wow. I am so much more leaning towards using Demon, where the politics at least can revolve around "should we look for Lucifer, and if we find him, what should we do after?" for my "I'd like to try a politics/scheming game" player now...

hyzmarca wrote:Blade probably did it better. Instead of having multiple vampire organizations, they had one vampire organization with various factions. Faction lines were basically determined by age. The oldskool vamps were loyal to house first. The younger vamps gave no fucks about clan lines. Plus you had the pureblood vs convert conflict, with the purebloods holding most of the political power via a feudal system that favored them and the ex-humans wanted their piece of the pie.

So while Eli Damaskinos nominally ruled all the vampires in the world, the fact was that he has little real power outside of his personal fief and his Ron-Prelman-containing hit-squad.

He had to worry about feudal house loyalists trying to install a House Chthon elder or whatever in his place, and he had to worry about young upstarts trying to become blood gods and conquer the world.
I have to say - this sounds far more playable than V:tM as written with Frank's critiques in mind.

The conflict is inherit, no easy solutions, and self contained with endless permutations.

The 40k ork clan and political structure seems a lot more sensible for a cooperative tRPG, and world building than what White Wolf produced for vampires.

The psionics of orks is pretty interesting, too. I could definitely have a lot of fun exploring the orkish "laws" of magic

Every time you meet each other, you immediately have to start punching each other in the face.

So... basically nWoD Vampire.

Yes, but unlike nWoD, you get something out of it, because fangs are used as currency.

Does crossing over Whitewolf products work at all mechanically? Or at least fluff wise? Like is it possible to have a party consisting of vampire, demon, Mage, and werewolf and have that be at all playable?

Also, having your face punched out doesn't generally cause character death or permanent injury or even preclude being on good terms immediately afterwards.

Feral Vamps: Vamps that were made and abandoned so lacking clan guidance, if a group of them get together then a heirarchy is established based on whoever da 'ardest one among them is. Encounter with clan vamps either end in violence or recruitment into the clan.

Snake Bites: This vamp clan believes connection with the 'old ways' gives them power, and with the amount of thaumaturges among them they may be right. They like wearing earth tones and often keep pets. Other clans think of them as backwards.

Goffs: Current largest vamp clan, moody and like the color black. Uncompromising and willing to use violence to get their ways. A subset of them have a knack for music, called goff rockers. Other clans think of them as emo.

Blood Ax: In ancient times this was the largest clan as they made open use of human minions to destroy their rivals but the other clans united to take them down a peg in 'da big party'. Blood Axes today value integration/infiltration of human society and have a 'corporate' attitude. Other clans view them as soulless suits.

Deff Skulls: The sneakiest vamps around, they value 'treasure hunting' even if the treasure's owner is still around and have an inventive streak. Like the color blue and their protective talismans tend to be that color. Other clans think of them as thievin' gits.

Evil Sunz: These vamps love going fast, both in a metaphorical and literal manner. Like the color red, anything that makes them go fasta tends to be that color. Other clans view them as adrenaline junkies.

Bad Moon: Made up of the richest vamps around, their long fangs are gums deep into long term money making schemes. Like the color yellow as it's bright n' shiny like gold. Other clans think of them as poncy rich boys.

Not all vamps belong to clans, and there's also sub cultures that persist among all clans, being...

Freebootas: Vamps that band together to make their own fortune and explore the world far from established vampire enclaves. Valued as information brokers and guns for hire.

Melankolics/Madboyz: Vamps that get too deep in the ennui of immortality in the darkness. Their aura of depression is draining to non melancholic vamps so they tend to be avoided, lest that vamp also become one of them.

There are a few issues with crossing over WW products. The mechanical problem is that there was no Core System, just a core resolution mechanic, so if you look at the same action across gamelines, difficulty, effect, etc. can differ.

Fluff wise, the problems vary depending on the mix.

We're going to start with werewolves, because I know them best. Werewolves are embodied spirit creatures created by Gaia to basically be her antibodies. Their game posits an animistic world, in which things are basically seen as being Gaian (created by Gaia), Wyrmish (tied to the universal force of destruction), Wyldish (tied to the universal force of creation), or Weaverish (tied to the universal force of stasis). The metaplot involves the Weaver, an actual spirit, going crazy and trying to tie down the Wyrm because his entire job is to wreck her shit. Literally. This drove the Wyrm insane, which throws the world out of whack, and means that spirits of disease and death and other bad stuff are going balls out crazy in the world.

Vampire posits a christian world, where god made people and then cursed one with awesome and a sun allergy for killing his brother. They are dead, and usually rather embroiled in "corrupt" things that are considered wyrmish, so werewolves think that vampires are inherently wyrm-tainted, and will destroy them on sight. This is dumb because if anything, vampires are actually weaverish, being such static and eminently human creatures (The Weaver basically created humans).

Mages work along with Werewolf's world, since one ninth of magic is Spirit magic, and it talks about a lot of the same sort of spirit creatures. However, werewolves tend to be xenophobic and superstitious dicks (like Conservatives), and so whether a werewolf would work with a mage is unlikely. Possible, though.

Demon, hilariously enough, posits a broadly, but not specifically, christian world. Cain exists in the Demon backstory, and the Demon novels have the protagonist demon meet a vampire and catch up on Noddian history, but the actual theology and cosmology of Demon actually mixes christian metaphysics with those of several other religions and does not specifically say that Christianity is the One True Way. Werewolves would probably hate Slayers (former angels of death) and high-torment Scourges (former angels of the wind and the breath of life. With high torment some can spread disease). On the other hand, Devourers (former angels of the beasts and plants), and Defilers (former angels of emotion and the seas) would probably be pretty well accepted by werewolves, seen as Wyldish. The other three houses of demons include the Devils, basically demon aristocracy, Malefactors, basically forge demons who make shit, and Fiends, basically demons of oracle. Whether werewolves see demons as inherently wyrmish probably depends a lot on your ST, but I wouldn't say they do. Oh, and there are the Earthbound, who are demons who broke out a long time before anyone else and basically became lovecraftian abominations. They're definitely wyrmish. ...also possibly the demons that werewolves would have met before. so...

On the other hand, while Werewolf is the biggest fly in the ointment for crossover games fluff-wise, there is a tribe of werewolves that fell to the Wyrm, the Black Spiral Dancers, who are... kind of like the Sabbat of the werewolves? In that they run around raping and murdering (explicitly, rather than the non-wyrm werewolves, who are just condescending pricks who see humans as chattel and might have rape vans but are not stated to). They work with anyone who is wyrmish, so you could totally have a game where the players are a Black Spiral Dancer, a Sabbat vampire, pretty much any flavor of mage that wants to be dark and edgy, and a Destroyer-faction Demon (demons who want to wreck the world). However, if you don't want to run a game like that, including a werewolf in a group with a vampire or a lot of other non-werewolf splats requires a bit of mental gymnastics. Especially since werewolves depend on their social structure to gain access to higher level powers, and their social structure will ostracize them if they work with anything not-approved by the elders.

As we discussed in the Mummy books... not really? Or rather, the "main groups" kept getting cockblocked to work together. Werewolves are required by law to kill vampires wherever they find them or die trying (really, that is not even a joke). Mages have various hate-ons for vampires and werewolves. And of course the power level for the "not vampires" is crazy high compared to what even the Tremere get up to. And the interactions between powers of different creature types is wholly unexplained.

Vampires have a Humanity score that counts down and a Self Control that counts down to show how rage frenzy susceptible they are; and werewolves have a Rage score that counts up to show how rage frenzy susceptible they are. So vampires and werewolves have various powers that influence whether others of their kind go into rage frenzy. What happens when they try to use it on the other type is pretty much anyone's guess because the mechanics are that a high number is more susceptible to rage in Werewolf while a low number is more susceptible to rage in Vampire. It isn't just that they are not on the same scale (although they are not), they don't even point in the same direction.

Well, you'd have to drop a lot of White Wolf assumptions, but that seems no great loss. Consider instead:

Vampires can survive in the day (sunlight merely reduces their powers, like in Dracula), and don't fear fire. So in the Dark Ages they can interact with mortal society and also can have social gatherings of their own. They are more mobile than humans in the past, having endurance and speed abilities standard and also having the personal agency to not have to farm the same patch of dirt year after year. A lot of them shuffled their location around every five years or so to avoid people noticing that they don't age, and they developed the kind of elaborate hospitality/resource sharing rules that nomadic people always do for when they bump into others during their travels. The ones that keep land have to do "manor rotation" where different vampires take turns being the lord so it looks like a succession rather than a single vampire count.

Then we go full Anne Rice with our war of ages shit. Higher blood potency vampires need to drink more potent blood. So fledglings can drink pig blood if they want to, but at Potency 3 you need human blood. At Potency 6 you need vampire blood. And at Potency 9 you need to drink the blood of vampires who are Potency 3 or higher. The legendary ancient vampires presumably have more stringent requirements were they to awaken. You can get around this somewhat by killing your prey, so Potency 6 vampires could run around killing people rather than drinking blood from younger vampires, and the elders could go around killing fledgling vampires instead of feeding from established vampires. The elder vampires create new vampires so that they will have something to eat, which is why some vampires are created "because they have a nice ass" or whatever rather than having a multi-year training and testing program to determine who gets to join the immortals club. Not all of the fledglings are even supposed to survive.

The international vampire organizations were created to guarantee a steady supply of vampire blood going up to the elders. And the younger vampires join because it provides protection from elders running around killing them and also because the elder vampires provide material benefits like money and fancy houses and shit to entice the younger vampires to stay inline.

Such a setup has long standing traditions of sharing and layers of conspiracy dating back from before the organizations were fully codified. It also has real resources that are distributed unfairly and in a contestable manner as well as systems in place to quickly transfer control of resources from one vampire to another. It puts the vampires into comprehensible age related interest groups. The youngest vampires would like the slightly older vampires to shield them from the very old vampires killing them outright by blood tithing and want to blood tithe to the merely old vampires as little as possible. And honestly, wouldn't it be better for everyone if crazy old Dracul just went to the sleep of ages and everyone manor shared all his shit?

Vampire the Masquerade lacked a coherent reason for the Vampires of Boston to want to join up with an international conspiracy. It also lacked a coherent reason for young vampires to want to join the established vampire crime families rather than just doing their own thing. But it didn't have to be like that. The criminal syndicates could have come with perks as well as responsibilities for new members.

In nWoD, getting to a quite senior level in the Invictus just lets you drive the company car on weekends (that should be a joke, but it is not). Being even a minor member of a syndicate should come with significant perks for any vampire. The higher ups should need you, so they should give you access to stuff that you wan

I was working on the idea of vampire politics and started looking at the hierarchy of needs. Some hold true, vampires have to eat, in a fashion, but others don't, vampires don't breath, and just need blood, not food and water. Then there's the idea of the need for "self-transcendence," which I could see, since it seems to be a need to be part of something bigger. But then there's the drive to procreate. In living creatures it's a physiological urge that furthers the species, but vampires are immortal, barring accident or violence, so they don't need to ensure the "species" in the way that living creatures do. But I could see the human urge to procreate changing into an urge to create a legacy and a social group that is beholden to them and can help protect them.

Wondering about how precisely pack hunters in nature establish their hierarchy, I googled them, and found a correlation between pack hunting and cooperative breeding. Which actually works really well for vampires, after a fashion. Vampires have the human need for socialisation, and if you want to focus on the war of ages, they have to embrace vampires so they can ensure their food source/security. But the actual raising and instruction of a new vampire probably gets tedious after a time or two, so they start telling their already taught childer to teach the new one, like in some forms of cooperative breeding, just absent (a need for) a second entity at the top.

So there's your coterie. It's like being a Sabbat vampire, but instead of just being embraced in the same general timespan, you're all the childer of one vampire, or the childer of a coterie of older vampires, who have tossed you out after embracing the next generation and getting them trained up. The manor gets a bit crowded, you see.

I'm still working on the actual politics, but I did like that idea. The very basics of politics should be stuff like feeding rights, pick of manors, that sort of thing. And of course, the bare minimum of benefits for higher position is that you get to tell more an more vampires to shove their territory where the moon don't shine. At a bare minimum, having a court position means that you get to tell vampires without positions that you're going to feed in their territory, and they can't really stop you. It's considered bad manners to not tell them, but in that case all they can do is bitch to the prince, who'll probably tell them to suck it up. Then the Primogens can feed in the territory of anyone below them, and the Prince can feed anywhere in his city and has impunity to punish as he sees fit anyone who dares to question it. But that's the bare minimum of what you should get for having a position.

One thing that V:tM did have right is that it's important that all the different player characters can be from different lines of vampires. Only the Sabbat managed to come up with a reason that all the different flavors of vampires would be in a group together, but V:tM had the right idea that the different players are going to want to be playing different flavors of vampire right from the beginning.

From a playability standpoint, you have to get different flavors of vampire of roughly equal power but ideally very different skill and power sets to join up together into a permanent team that lasts as long as the campaign does. Then the team needs group goals that every member of the team wants to advance which are amenable to being advanced by the different skill and power sets of the different characters. Basically you need a clarity of vision for what your coterie does and why you're all part of it that is as persuasive as D&D's "Adventuring Party" or Shadowrun's "Shadowrunner Team."

But "You're all made by the same vampire" isn't going to cut it, because the players are going to make their characters independently and want to play different kinds of vampires with very different backstories. That means you're going to need a "grouping event." Doesn't have to be as hamfisted and silly as the Sabbat blood ritual, but it needs to be at least that effective in team building.

Yeah, that's why I appended the "children of an older coterie" option.

If you have 'manor sharing' and that turns into 'metro sharing' in the modern nights, the coterie could be an extension of that. The Prince gathers together a group of young vampires and says 'you get this chunk of the city as your turf, make sure the masquerade is maintained and tithe me x units of blood each quarter.'

That setup allows for vampires of different clans to be joined together as a natural reaction to the prince trying to prevent the individual lineages from accumulating sovereign territories (as a step to taking the entire city for one clan/powerful elder) it allows for the party to have a mix of abilities but also to have internal drama if that happens to be a thing the players want because maybe the Prince puts rivals on various teams or different primogen lobby for favored children or something.

And once you have assigned turf the GM can throw various threats at it that the group is expected to stop as a focus for the campaign, and the players can seek to develop things that matter to them so they can hoard more blood, or accumulate magical power or whatever. This would also allow for homesteading type campaigns - go beg the Prince for the rights to unused territory in some suburb he doesn't care about. It would also mean you could run some elaborate intrigues based around whatever complex rules of vampire hospitality you chose to implement - perhaps the orphan vampires who fail to hold territory are stuck in some crappy area with crummy socializing options - like maybe the Prince of New York exiles incompetents to Yonkers or something, that fits the Communist Party setup framework.

While a lot people are going to say "no" the answer is that there are enough similarities that you can use the other games in whichever game you are playing.

There will be no balance, and as other have stated it basically requires picking one meta-plot and pushing the others into the background. However, if your mage player doesn't CARE that the your particular game posits that V:TM is the one true setting then you can pretty easily make all the different supernaturals function.

This was typically done by assuming that the powers/characteristics of each type of monster-person could be pulled from any source but the "rules" were typically take from whichever game the storyteller was most familiar with. When I played explicit crossover games previously the ruleset was always "Vampire: The Dark Ages" even though the game was a typical V:TM game with werewolves and mages (nobody cared about any of the supernaturals).

The other thing to remember is that each game did have explicit crossover in the core rulebooks. The are rules for vampire badguys in Werewolf, and I think that there are rules for werewolf bad guys in mage. However, they are expressed using the rules of game you were currently reading. So W:TA vamps are described using werewolf powers.

Really, the best example of "crossover" in OWOD is the Troika videogame "V:TM Bloodlines". In that game the player encounters other vamps, ghosts, and a werewolf. The werewolf is treated as the thing used to scare newly turned vamps. You fight it, you kill it with silver bullets, drink its blood and get a whole bunch of spendable xp.

The werewolf in Bloodlines is invulnerable, and the only way to kill him is to use automatic doors in the observatory to cut off his head. What you are actually expected to do is to run away until the train arives and then escape. However you can kill a wereshark.

yeah, your right. Its been a while I just remembered that it was basically an "event" and you did something really specific but I am pretty sure you do drink its blood for a super boost. Right after that you enter the last quarter of the game.

Are you sure you don't have to shoot him in the face after he is trapped in the doors? Maybe I just wasted a bunch of bullets....

I forget exactly how you go about doing it, but you can also blow the werewolf up by shoving a grenade down its throat.

Bloodlines doesn't have grenades in it, except as a part of an event in the Anarchs ending.

You just wasted a bunch of bullets. There is werewolf blood in the game, in an early quest in Santa Monica, but you can't drink it, so you are just really confused.

The grenade in Bloodlines belongs to Anarch leader Nines Rodriguez. You go to Griffith Park to meet up with Nines Rodriguez, and are subsequently attacked by a werewolf. It's been a while since I've played, but I think there's a way to get Nines to give you the grenade in advance? Or maybe he's the one who blows up the werewolf? I can't remember.

Yeah, but it is worth 4 xp. At that point you really shouldn't care much about xp because you should already be crushing everything but it still a "big" reward in game terms for a single action (usually get 1-2 for any single kill/action/thing). I think that after the game came out one of my friends who was our resident white wolf fan boy who followed everything told me that your vamp should drink the blood. However, a quick review of the FAQ says you are totally right.

Anatomy of Failed Design
Vampire: the Masquerade

Image

A Small World After All

The World of Darkness wasn't terribly worldly in the sense that it was pretty bad at conveying the idea that things were global in any meaningful sense.

Part of that was that the authors just couldn't be fucked to keep shit straight. New York is depicted as a Sabbat city in the Sabbat Player's Guide and A World of Darkness, but it's depicted as a Camarilla city in New York by Night and the Nosferatu Clan Novel. The Japanese vampires portrayed in A World of Darkness are completely different from the Japanese vampires in Kindred of the East. The world wasn't persistent book to book because the authors didn't even fucking read the previous books and just wrote whatever they felt like with no real developer oversight.

And part of it was that no organized attempt to really cover the map. Despite the enormous amount of shovelware produced, most of it covers the same shit over and over again. In the year 2001 White Wolf put out 67 books across all their lines. That's not a joke. They put out more than five books a month for the entire year. Now, a lot of them were obscure bullshit like Changing Breed Book 8: Rokea, but the fact remains that there were a lot of books. And I don't think they mention the cities of Brazzaville or Dushanbe at all. Chicago probably got at least a mini writeup over a hundred times, but where's the love for Ljubljana or Phnom Penh?

And part of it was that when they did talk about really foreign places, it was often really bad. Like, offensively bad. The book about Blackulas seriously talks about spear wielding savages. The book about Mummies has Mohamed casually and enthusiastically breaking the First Commandment because the authors have no idea what is and is not offensive to Muslims.

But even when restricted to the context of North America and Western Europe, the coverage just isn't very good. What the fuck is happening in Fresno? I don't know. You'd think that with literally hundreds of books that are mostly ranting about North America that you could find shit about cities with a million fucking people in them. But as far as I can tell, you cannot. The writing has a heavy East Coast and Midwest bias, but it also has a top-down methodology. Every time you talk about California, you start talking about LA, and then you start talking about San Francisco, and so on. You never say anything about California's fifth largest city because you run out of wordcount before you get there. And next time California comes up you won't pick up where you left off, you'll start over again with LA.

Points of Darkness

White Wolf's shovelware production methods and complete lack of plan meant that the same couple of areas got covered over and over again. And it also meant that what did get written for those areas was thoroughly and repeatedly contradicted in earlier and later writings. But it also meant that most of the places didn't get covered at all. Not only did most of the literal places, but most of the kinds of place didn't get discussed, so there wasn't anything to extrapolate from.

Five in six people in America live in a metropolitan area. But a metropolitan area is defined as any area that has an urban core of fifty thousand or more people. Of the United States' 363 metropolitan areas, only 62 of them have a million or more people. The average American lives in an area with the population density of Baltimore in a metropolitan aggregate the size of Boise, Idaho. These places aren't big and sexy like New York City, nor are they rural and quaint like Wasila, Alaska. They are just low to medium density cities with some hundreds of thousands people in them. People in Europe often don't appreciate how many or how big these American cities really are – Modesto, California is the 79th largest metropolitan area in the US and it's the population of the greater Dresden area, while Spokane, Washington may be the 91st biggest metropolitan area but it's the population of aire urbaine Rouen. Americans also frequently miss this fact, thinking that most of real America is living in rural areas – which hasn't been true since 1910.

But while these middling grade cities are most of the American experience, they are completely and conspicuously absent from World of Darkness discussions. What do vampires do in the middling cities, suburbs, and large towns where most people live? I can understand if they only pass through small towns and rural areas as predatory hobos, but there's over half a million people around Johnson City, Tennessee. What do the vampires and werewolves do there?

A Thorough Lack of Planning

Image

The world is pretty big and has a lot of people in it. Even back in 1990 when V:tM was first being written there were more than five billion people on Earth. And there are more than seven billion now. And not to put too fine a point on it: but most of them are not white. In fact, more than four in five people are not white. This means that when you make declarative statements that, for example, you've named 7 out of the 13 total clans of vampire in your setting and all seven of them are white people, you haven't left yourself a whole lot of room to fill out the rest of the world. It is, when you think about it, kind of stupid to have a Middle Eastern origin story for your vampires and have none of the introductory clans be identifiably Middle Eastern. Subsequently making one (1) Middle Eastern clan doesn't actually make the whole thing any less weird.

As mentioned earlier when talking about the expansion clans, the expansions were done in no particular order with no particular plan. Any author who wanted to write up an expansion clan just did, and their products were nearly as Euro-centric as the original work. In fact, Gypsies, Arabs, and Spaniards may tan more than Nords and Brits, but they are still white people. The classical Egyptians included both white and black people, and the Samedi are black people. But there are no Indians or Chinese or Native Americans or whatever on that list. Eventually someone noticed that the Romani people are originally from India, and that therefore having made a Gypsy clan they actually did have a (single) Indian clan – but that just raises more questions than it answers. Like, why are there Ravnos in the Dark Ages setting at all, when the Romani people didn't migrate to Europe until the 14th century.

There are lots of different ways to approach the fact that you've seriously cocked up your setting by not leaving yourself any room to talk about people of color or indeed most of the planet. You could announce that the 13 clans thing was just for the vampires from Asia Minor who migrated into Europe and that the rest of the world had their own damn clans. You could just sort of ignore the 13 clan thingy and just keep writing vampire types as you saw fit. You could take whatever white people clans you have and just give them new names and shticks in other parts of the world. And White Wolf variously did all of those things. Often in sequence for the same fucking place. So you had the Gaki, who in A World of Darkness were an extra special Japanese clan, and then you had Kindred of the East come in and announce that actually there weren't any Japanese Kindred and there were these other fuckers who were kinda like vampires but had different color chi balls or something. The Gaki had a level 10 to their weird ass mind prison discipline, which means by the standards of the game world they were a founding clan; but they were just pushed to the side when Kindred of the East was written with a different (and much zanier) concept for filling Asia with completely separate undead. But that didn't stop them from writing up East Asian variants of the Euro clans like the Wu Zao and the Anda in yet other books.

Every time someone thought about making something for the setting, they did. Sometimes it didn't make any sense. Sometimes it directly contradicted some other piece of the setting written by someone else. But in any case it was always a spectacularly bad use of conceptual space. The Giovanni may have been fun, but there was no need for them to be one of the great clans. You could do the entire Giovanni storyline with any clan at all, though it would probably work best with Ventrue, Brujah, or Lasombra. It's just a family of sorcerers and necrophiliacs who have vampires who embrace and/or ghoul a lot of members of the family and also run an organized crime group. That entire concept needs zero extra clans. Then there's shit like the Tlacique. Just fucking why? It's not like you can't find snake cultists in Mexico. For fuck's sake, the Setites are based on REH snake cultists and Howard has a shared universe with Lovecraft and Lovecraft put the descendents of the snake cultists that the Setites are based on in Mexico. You don't have to have a separate version of Setites for Mexico because the source material you're drawing from already has Mexican Setites in it! Fuck!

Image
The original source material Setites are an ancient cult that appears in Egypt and Mexico. Do your fucking research before cluttering up the setting.

Conservation of detail is a big issue. And when you have dozens of people writing with no plan and no direction, contracting each other left and right, you're going to chew through detail that could be spent filling out the setting just cluttering up the setting at a tremendous pace. No good can come from knowing what the Valeren discipline does or whether it's any good in whatever edition you're nominally trying to play it.

The White Elephant in the Room

Image

OK, the Ravnos are racist. The fact that they exist is basically a hate crime. A lot of the facets of the Laibon are racist. When you're making monsters that represent people and have exaggerated characteristics, you're stepping very close to racism. And for whatever the reason, the formula they mostly used for expansion clans was Ethnicity + Special Power = New Clan. And that's a formula that is almost certain to spit out racist tripe fairly often. And it did!

What's odd is how thoroughly it didn't fit with the setting. All these bloodlines were supposed to have started thousands of years ago. But... none of the human tribes we care about existed back then. There were no Romani or Spaniards two and ahalf thousand years ago for the Ravnos or Lasombra to even consider giving a shit about one way or the other. Hell, there were barely even Aryans and Celts. There's genuinely no excuse for any of these clans to have associated ethnic stereotypes. It simply doesn't make sense.

All of these clans got their start before any of the nations that are recognized today. A racist Methuselah would rant at you about how you couldn't trust an Elamite or make offensive jokes like “Pyu? More like Piu!” The tribes and languages that existed when these bloodlines began simply don't exist anymore.

The bottom line is that the uncomfortable racist elements of Vampire: the Masquerade are not poorly handled things that had to be discussed. They are not land mines in the tapestry of an otherwise reasonable discussion. The game is going way the fuck out of its way to paint these little racialist pictures even when they flatly do not fit the narrative. And you know what? That just makes the whole exercise a whole lot more uncomfortable than it needs to be.
