So, manga you like lately

Post by AndreiChekov »

I had a moment where my internet wasn't working well enough to stream anime, and started reading manga. I've found a few excellent titles.

1/2 prince - its a semi gender bender thing with a girl that pretends to be a guy in a virtual world. Mostly comedy, slight bits of romance.

Ao Haru Ride - a typical shoujo romance thing, but it does it better than most of them, and i really like the art style

One-Punch Man.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Manga eh. Nanoha has a bunch of supplementary manga most of it is forgettable supplementary material, but the movie manga was unexpectedly awesome

Along similar lines Prisma Illya's 3rd manga is still ongoing it works on a similar principal to Nanoha. Which is what if we did a spinoff where the little sister character was a magical girl and then made the fight scenes randomly badass?

I recommend the Nanoha sequel manga, though unfortunately their translations are kinda falling through. Maybe it'll pick back up once the Vivid anime comes out.

Vivid follows the life of Nanoha and Fate's daughter as she attends elementry school with her friends, practices martial arts, and gets involved in old feuds from ancient kings.

Force has a male protagonist, of all things. There's this engineered disease called the Eclipse Virus that makes people super-strong, regenerating, and immune to magic, and also will turn them into amorphus lumps of flesh unless they kill people. In their quest to get Spell Resistance: No, everyone is getting progressively more elaborate gear like so:

I won't claim it's good, but I've been alternating Appleseed and Legal Drug for bedtime reading the last week.

Thermae Romae is... well, you'll figure what it is. It's the best recent manga I've read.

The Databook's a great setting guide. It mentions Jesus coming back in China after the meteor wiped out the Communist Party, leading to democracy spreading through China and an alliance with Japan against the US.

Seconding this.

The art is stellar. The plot is solid. The action is gripping.

Japanese take on the traditionally Marvel/DC superheroes setting.

And the lead character is so unlikely that it will blow your mind.

currently following:

Tower of God
One Punch Man
Boku no Hero Academia
God of Highschool
Dice : The cube that changes everything
The Breaker : New Waves

I suppose this is actually in order of my preference as it turns out, though that wasn't my conscious intent when I listed them. The two at the bottom are in danger of me dropping them since they are losing my interest.

Yeah, I don't get this, too. The pacing of current shounen manga seems to be literally taken from Dragon Ball Z anime, which people used to make jokes about. Naruto or Bleach got away with spending RL years describing fighting done in a single day.

Writing one. The conventions and tropes of manga are so weird.

Most common cited here is one punch man which definitely does not have DBZ pacing.

One Punch Man is just such an awesome deconstruction of superhero tropes. I love the shit out of it.
Then, once you have absorbed the lesson, that your so-called "friends" are nothing but meat sacks flopping around in the fashion of an outgassing corpse, pile all of your dice and pencils and graph-paper in the corner and SET THEM ON FIRE. Weep meaningless tears.

Girls of the Wilds

I know it sounds like porn, but it actually isn't.
Its a shoujo based on martial arts.

Edit: clicked post before I finished. Stupid beer.

Correction, it started as a shoujo, with the typical half naked guys hanging out, and then developed into a shounen with cute girls everywhere. The girls were everywhere at the start, but they started being emphasized as cute.

I suspect, because it is a webcomic manga, that at some point they realized that most of their fans were guys, but it doesn't seem to have started that way.

Knight Run started as some crazy epic combination between starship troopers, gundams and sword porn. Long story short, in the future humanity has expanded to multiple planets until meeting killer bug race that wants to nom everything and starting a war with them. The bugs come in many different sizes and shapes, but the most dangerous ones are human-sized ones with organic plasma blades that are both really fast and really tough so the regular military usually gets curbstomped by them. Cue the creation of the Knight Organization where the most badass humans are trained to their peaks and given super swords that can cut the super bugs and must use super martial arts to defeat said bugs in close combat. The military still plays an important role to both clear away the bug chaff and also guard flanks/rear as the knights are few and would just get drowned by sheer numbers if trying to fight the bug hordes alone. The military ranges from basic infantry with guns to real mechas, combat androids and battleships.

Alas right now the story seems to have degenerated into school drama/comedy, but the first ~70 chapters are a whole story on their own right well worth the read.

Another manga I'm following with interest is Gunka no Baltzar. In not-XIX century Europe, a military instructor gets assigned to a neighbour country and tries to modernize their military. His theoretical skills are soon put to test as the country is in turnoil. Very serious business, no crazy martial arts or magic or steampunk, just how the introduction of technologies like rifles (in contrast to muskets), barbed wire and machine guns changed how wars were fought.

I usually don't pick up ongoing things because I get to the end of what is currently written and feel miserable for a while, but this sounds/looks cool enough to give it a try. I assume you mean the one written by Kim Sung-min?

I can't do it. It has a bunch of fighting for a bunch of chapters before giving me a reason to care about who wins.

I started, and finished, the Breaker. It is a Shounen manga, so I was worried that it wouldn't be to my liking, but it starts off with making you like the characters, and some jokes, and then gets to the zombies and martial arts. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that the person writing this has never studied martial arts, so it is more like martial sorcerers-arts-of-beyond-weaboo-faitan-styles.
