I was thinking of writing a revision of the SRD MM with better monsters, but I was thinking about a few weird rules that needed clarification in my mind.
So, can you jump so high you take falling damage on the way down?

No. The entire jump up/down action is a single action, and the only way you'd take damage is if you ended up in a place which was above ground level.
So if you horizontal jump off a cliff, you take falling damage. But you take damage from the distance from the level you started at, and not the maximum height you achieved during the horizontal jump.
