Turning attempts per day.

Post by Lago_AM3P »

Do temporary boosts in charisma give a cleric more turning attempts?

That's an excellent question, and one which is bound to start (ironically enough), some religious arguments. See, while the recharge requirements of spells per day are well and rigidly defined, the recharge requirements of all other limited use abilities are not.

When you have one rage per day, can you use it at 11 AM if the last time you used it was 5 in the afternoon yesterday? What if you haven't slept since then? If yes to both (and there is no specific sleep requirement for raging), can you do it at midnight if the last time you did it was at six in the morning? What if you are in the Astral Plane and time doesn't exactly pass?

And so on and so forth. The rules don't say what constitutes a "day" for any purpose other than spell preperation. So when those limits are refreshed is completely up in the air. Most of the time its irrelevent, because people just hand-wave time passing anyhow, so the nitty gritty details of how many hours or minutes have to go by before it's another day doesn't come up. But when it does, we're fvcked.

And it doesn't get any better when you start talking about stuff like undead turning attempts, which are descirbed in multiple different ways. For example, in some places turning attempts are described restrictively - such as "may not be used more than X times per day; while in other places the description is expansion - such as "can be used X times per day".

There are specific passages that can be read so as that you have a number of charges which are used up throughout the day (and thus the limit on the number of times you can use it is based on your charisma whenever that number of charges is set), and othes which can be read so that you have a tally of turning attempts you have used today and you can't raise that tally higher than your limit based on current charisma. Turning attempts either work like normal damage or subdual damage, and it affects whether you benefit from a short-duration charisma boost right before your last uses of turning. And the rules don't say which - or rather, they say both.

I don't think there are any rules on that.

My call would be "yes and no."

By the rules, I'm pretty sure you can get more uses per day of Turning while you have the temp boost. When it turn off, you are limited by the number of turns you have done that day.

So, lets say you have 4 attempts a day. You get a Cha boost, and you are up to 6 a day. If, during the boost, you used 5 attempts, while the boost was on you'd have 1 left. When the boost ended, you'd have none, even if you didn't use that last one.

Also, multiple boosts in a day can add to the max per day you can cast, but they won't directly add to the number you can cast. If you got boosted a number of times during the day, you will still be limited by the number you have used in that day. So if you normally use 4 per day, and you got boosted to 6 and you used them all, and you were later boosted to 9, you'd only get to use it 3 more times during that boost. If later that day you got boosted to 6 again, you'd still have used it 6 times that day, and so could not use it any more.

So you can say that a higher Cha adds to your uses per day limit, not that it adds uses per day.

Since its a huge pain, as a DM I'd just say no.
