Phalanx [Feat]

Post by virgil »

Phalanx Wall
Prerequisites: Proficiency in heavy shields, BaB +1
Benefit: With a move action or while using the Total Defense option, you may grant yourself improved cover (+8 cover bonus to AC) until the beginning of your next turn. You give up your standard shield bonus to AC when doing this.
You threaten all squares as normal, and your ability to attack is unhindered.
You only gain the benefit of improved cover between two adjacent corners of your space. If any of an attacker's corners can make a straight line that does pass through cover to one of your unguarded corners, then you only gain standard cover (+4 AC). If a straight line can be made by all of the attacker's corners to your unguarded corners, then the shield provides no bonus to AC.

The benefit here basically makes your heavy shield a crappy tower shield in most instances, because any opponent that's not directly ahead of you will generally be able to make a line and only have to deal with a +4 to AC.

The feat gains true use when you have cover on adjacent squares, preventing an attacker from being able to make a line to your unguarded rear corners.

First level warriors with this feat and breastplate armor now have an AC of 23 before Dexterity modifiers when fighting in formation.
