Thanks to two points cards from some folks, and a little bit of trading in, I'm now the proud owner of, through Wii virtual console:

-Super Mario RPG (old, old extremely favored)
-Harvest Moon SNES (have not played since I was in elementary school, so it sorta qualifies)
-A Link To The Past (another old favorite)

And then, because I was never able to find them when I was younger

-Super Metroid
-Mega Man X

I can already see why Super Metroid is remembered so fondly. The game's gorgeous and fluid gameplay just feels fun, and I'm digging it already. Also, the Space Pirates are pretty cool. I just got the Morph Ball Bombs, if anyone cares.

Mega Man X, I'm having trouble getting into. It's tough. It's Mega Man tough. Or maybe I've just become a wimpy little girly man, video game speaking, in these soft and decadent times. I'm sort proud that I did not actually die on the intro level.

Oh, and I picked up the Darkness 1 and 2, on the vociferous recommendation of a friend who likes it. Thirteen bucks for the pair. Gamestop actually owed me money after trade-ins.

The Darkness 1 has its flaws, but it does have some creepy stuff in there and I could see why the comics have their fans; I also like that exploration matters. Some of these shootouts are tough, too. I haven't started Darkness 2.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

IMHO, Darkness 1 and 2 have the best romance scenes I've ever seen in the video games.

Got Dark Souls 2.

-No pyromancer class. I'm broken-hearted. Some of the other classes have been tweaked. Bandit now has a bow, for example.

-The opening cutscene is all "You're undead and going to go Hollow and will got mad and there's nothing you can do to it." Lot less explanatory than Dark Souls 1.

-Dual-wielding feels like it could be viable. Combat feels sped up a touch.

-Dripping with even more atmosphere.

Just beat my third boss on Dark Souls 2. Would have done it on the first try if I'd been quicker to see his blind spot in his attacks.

I have good armor and weapons now. Pretty much all I need now is spells and I'll be Dark Souling it up.

Dark Souls 2: I've slain seven bosses now. And did the most recent two on my first try. And got pyromancy!

It's shorter than I remembered, and as long as you don't go out of your way to avoid enemy fights, you should level up enough to handle most things. The enemies-in-boxes are always brutal for their level.

It might be worth trying a replay on a ROM, where you can save anywhere. Nowadays I think the Paper Mario games hold up a little better, but it's still pretty great.

Dark Souls 2:

Bosses killed: Lost count. Well over ten, though. 15? Something like that.

Observations: It has a much more interactive world than the first one. The first one had shortcuts you could activate, but this? I mean, there's one boss who you fight in a pool of clingy poison sludge, unless you do something specific earlier in the level which drains the sludge down until you have a workable arena to stand on.

There's also way more merchants and quite a few of them will move to the hub area and more or less hang out there.

Got DW3 remake for the GBC the other day. Thoughts:

- It was the third and last title in what is known as the "Erdrick Saga", which is a term given to the first three games, as they all concern the legendary hero Erdrick and his descendants and their battles against evil. Specifically, this title is a prequel to the other two, as it is about the hero who became Erdrick, and how. Theoretically, this makes DWIII chronologically the first game in the whole series (although, since most DQ games outside the Erdrick Saga are rather standalone, it's kinda hard to make a coherent timeline out of the games). The original game was released on the NES in 1988, and the GBC remake was released in 2001.

- It was the first Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest game to introduce both the ability to choose your hero's gender and create your party from scratch. The ability to create your own party from scratch wouldn't be done again until DQIX, in 2010 (the original DWIII came out in 1988).

- It's also responsible for introducing the whole "personality chart" thing to the world. That personality quiz at the beginning of Daggerfall or the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series? Totally came from DW3. However, it's pretty cool here. There a quiz at the beginning of the game, in the form of a dream the player has. The one giving the quiz is a gigantass waterfall claiming to represent all. Most of the questions are pretty standard "what would you do if...?" types, although the last question is awesome: The player is warped into a random situation, with the "question's" answer being determined by the players actions in the situation.
(I did the quiz two times: the first time, I got warped to an endless desert where there were two brothers, one of them collapsed from the heat. The collapsed bro is telling his other bro to go on to the nearest town without him because they only have a day's worth of a water left, and they can't both make it. The player comes in by talking to the other bro, who asks whether he should do as his bro says and leave him behind, or whether they should go on together, with the risk that they might both die. The other time I did the quiz, I got teleported to the top of a tower, where a line of people where queueing up to jump off the edge of the tower, and the option here was to either jump along with them, or head back down the stairs. I jumped, of course. Actually, I didn't mean to, but there it is.)

- My mage character has a sexy personality. I am not kidding.

-My computer is also saying that mage is not a word. Stupid internet spell-checking not being good at it's job.

- Fuck four-char lett limi!!

- If you choose a female hero, various NPC's will think you are male, then express surprise when they discover you're actually a dudette. (I assume this is because in the original NES version of the game, the hero sprite was the same regardless of the gender chosen).

- The music is pretty great, Kōichi Sugiyama's live orchestra pieces 8-bititized. It's groovy. Not as good as some of his work in DQIV or later titles, although the final boss's theme is pretty BOSS. Heh.

- Everyone in the whole goddamn world is an asshole. Seriously, every NPC is an asshat. Although, this is kinda true in most DQ games...

- The sprite work is surprisingly detailed despite being rather small.

- Canniboxes (mimics, basically) make their series debut in this game. They are also super annoying and rather strong, and are encountered fairly early, and low-level parties will get OWNED. Gygax would be proud.

- Changing classes is rather borked, but I'm willing to give it some slack since it's the first game in the series to do so, and it was 1988 (or 2001 for the remake). Anyway, first off, the hero cannot change classes. (This is reasonable, I suppose, since the hero is special and all. Also, changing classes changes sprites, and the hero always needs to look unique.) Party members can, BUT! Only if they have reached level 20 in a given class. Changing classes resets the characters level to 1, and there stats go back as well. The class they are exiting it also reverted back to level 1, so you can't go back to being strong again. However, they can keep all learned spells and abilities, meaning, for instance, that you can have a warrior (which normally don't learn any spells) cast BlazeMore or something.

- Speaking of spells, since this was fairly early on in the series, the spells all had weird and ridiculous names. Blaze was a single target fireball attack, and BlazeMore was a stronger version of that (in DWI, it was known as Hurt and HurtMore. Far better I think). My personal favorite, however, is a spell called PanicAll... which, while it sounds like it would target a group, is in fact a single-taget confusion spell.

- There's a hobbit in the game!

- All the classes tend to be useful in some way, shape or form, except for the Jester class... which is really just there for fun: their stats are shit, except for their Luck (which is MASSIVE, and used mainly for determining how often crits occur), you cannot always control their actions, as they will occasionally just do their own thing, will sometimes attack themselves instead of enemies, they only learn one ability, and, aside from female jesters looking like playboy bunnies, they are rather useless.

- OR ARE THEY?!?1! The sage class, which is pure concentrated awesome, can normally only be obtained by finding a certain book, of which there are only one or two copies of, depending on the version of the game. HOWEVeR! Jesters can automatically unlock the sage class simply by becoming level 20. (Interestingly, there's an NPC who says he wants to change classes and become jester, before hurriedly and awkwardly amending his statement by saying he totally wants to become a great sage, which is a rather sly hint.)

I played a little of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai Gamecube port the other day. It's nowhere near as feature-rich as the later games in the series, but I've had fun with it so far. Even the easiest AI kicked my ass though - I lost to it several times in a row when I first started, which surprised me because I'd done much better at later games in the series before.

I found a coffin in Dark Souls 2. I got in it, because, well, the first game.

Little cutscene of the character laying in the coffin. Then getting out of it. I didn't see any change until now, many gameplay hours later when I stripped my character's armor off to make a long jump.

It genderflipped my character.

A quick google assured me that it was, yes, the coffin that did it.

Well, crap. Ain't that crazy.

That's amazing. I really need to get Dark Souls 2, but I'm too short on funds right now. That, and I have too many games in my Steam library I haven't even played yet.

Oh damn, Luftrausers came out earlier this month and I didn't even notice. Downloading it right now, and I'm really looking forward to the sepia-colored dogfighting ahead.

You have...about two or three weeks until it comes out on Steam.

Good to know. I'll probably have to wait a little longer than that to have the time and money to invest in it, but I am seriously looking forward to it. I should get back to my second playthrough of the first game, in which I learned beating the game once isn't an excuse to fight the Gaping Dragon at level 20ish in light armour.

I will say this one exploits a lot of player knowledge.

Enemies have a wider variety of movesets. It also isn't nearly as shy about throwing hordes at you. If you see something middle-weight for the area, you can bet your ass you'll have six or seven of them charging at you with intent to rape your ass as SOME point.

Taking a break from Dark Souls 2. I've been playing the FFX HD release.

It's the International versions of both FFX and FFX-2, so they have some tweaks.

F'rinstance, I never really played Blitzball but even I knew that trick about hiding over by your own goal.

That doesn't work now.

After some experimentation and effort, I actually won a season in blitzball. The Al Bhed motherfuckers knocked me out of a tournament, though, because every time I tried to score their goalie, who already has REALLY HIGH blocking skills, would be punching more than his weight.

I messed around with FFX-2 a bit. Got the two new costumes--Psychic and Festivalist--and it's something idle to play when I don't want to listen to Tidus. Or don't want to make another try at the Smelter Demon in Dark Souls 2.

Any advice for someone about to play Metal Gear Solid for the first time?

The original. I got the Legacy collection over the weekend.

I've played--and beaten and loved--Metal Gear Rising. I know it's pretty much only got characters and setting in common with MGS, though.

Being behind the times, I just started playing The Binding of Isaac. I'm hoping to unlock most everything before messing with spidermod. The tear modification that I am most ambivalent about is explosive shots, since I've died against mom a couple of times now from blowing myself up.

Metal Gear Solid is actually pretty easy. If you get a new weapon or item, it is always the right one for the next task/boss/trap you encounter. That was one of the first games I ever played, and I remember it being hard, but that was because I'd never played a game before.
Peace favour your sword.

I only play 3.x

I picked up Dark Souls 2 again, after some setting it aside for a few weeks.

I've renewed my Xbox multiplayer again in the meantime, so now I have to deal with the Dark Souls Multiplayer Experience. Again.

It hasn't been so bad. I've only been invaded by randos a couple of times. I didn't make the character with PVP in mind, and it appears everyone and their granny uses Sorcery, so I lose those fights.

THAT ASIDE

I've taken out two bosses, one assisted, and then one of the game's big bosses unassisted. Turns out a boss which makes slow heavy attacks is vulnerable to a guy wielding an anvil on a pole. Who knew?

So next up: The Brightstone Caves

I started playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning last night. It's been fun so far, even if I'm not yet out of the tutorial section. I've decided to go with a middle of the road jack-of-all-trades style character for now (splitting my points more or less evenly between the three combat trees) until I figure out which branch works best for me.

I'm currently Level 2 and can already shoot lightning, use a magical harpooning skill to pull enemies to me/rocket myself to large enemies, and toss up a cloud of dust and then throw out a bunch of knives. So, that's pretty cool. I haven't found a weapon set that I'm totally happy with yet. I like the look of the fuck-off big hammer, but it's slow and enemies dodge around the overheads easily.
