Striking back at the 'Not D&D' accusations: New Titles

Post by Lago_AM3P »

Yeah, I've made this decision before. My bad.

But seriously, if we're redesigning D&D, it needs a new name. That way all the old crap won't get grandfathered in because 'that just felt like D&D'!

Some stuff that was a staple of earlier D&D but now just doesn't exist anymore or fell to the wayside from disuse:

Aging penalties
Fixed experience per encounter
Named Magical Items
Morale
Weapon Speed
Racial level limits
Staggered class experience
Cursed Magical Items

But anyway. Enough of that crap. Here are some totally sweet titles we should call the next version of D&D from now on. It's hip, it's fresh, and we don't have to do stuff like add in a charisma stat just so it feels like D&D.

D&D: Edition Zero
D&D: Dead World Rising
D&D: Revenge
D&D: Worlds of The Past
D&D: Painful Reckoning
Ultimate D&D
Worlds of Dungeon
Heroes in Monster World
D&D: Eternal Life
D&D: Minus Worlds

Or something.

Feel free to add your own totally sweet titles.

Personally, I'm fond of Eternal Life and Revenge, but that's just me.

I'm such a silly fanboy. Gah.

I prefer plain d20 fantasy. If you're going to break all the conventions of D&D you might as well drop the D&D label anyway.

I agree with RC. My thing is called Talarius Letalis, latin for lethal dice.

But... but... you don't understand! Dungeons and Dragons is such a sweet game. I gotta call my homebrew system D&D.

I like it more than I like my children. I like it more than JESUS.

Note. Lago cannot attract any woman long enough to have children with him and regularly goes to church.

Talarius Letalis is a damn cool name. Sounds good normally and it's even better considering the translation.

I think the best renaming strategy would be to copycat some other successful sequels/revamps or renaming. Thus I offer the following suggestions:

D&D 2000
D&D Alpha
D&D XP (or alternately D&D Service Pack 2)
D&D: The Next Generation
D&D: Gygax Strikes Back
D&D Zeta
D&D: Game Systems Reborn
Nissan
Vocelli D&D
Verizon D20
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Josh, don't forget the perennial favorite "D&D2: Electric Boogaloo".

I'm confused. the basic 3.5 rules have:

--Fixed experience per encounter: XP per CR
--Named Magical Items: Intelligent items all have names
--Racial level limits: Favored classes look like this in a bad light
--Aging penalties and Cursed Magical Items: all Core.

That being said...

Whatever new system is created is not d20, so it can't have that name. I suggest:

--DnD X for extreme or some other post Gen-Xish adjective with an X somewhere in it.

--DnD Omega. The last version of DnD you'll ever play.

--DnD Tournement Edition. Since it'll be balanced, it will be suitable for pick-up games.

--DnD Foundation System or DnD Fundamental System. A system that can form the core of any kind of fantasy game world.

--DnD Unbound: Free of the core failures of previous editions of DnD.

No, it's XP per CR per level. 2 variables per monster, so it's not fixed.
--Named Magical Items: Intelligent items all have names
There exists the ability to add named magical items, but the Wand of Orcus is no longer on the treasure chart. Heck, you could add a thieve's guild of giant parakeet rogues if you wanted, the ability to add things doesn't mean anything.
K wrote:--Racial level limits: Favored classes look like this in a bad light
Racial level proportions are nothing like racial level limits. Seriously, one scales.
K wrote:--Aging penalties and Cursed Magical Items: all Core
But he said "falling by the wayside". Aging penalties no longer acrue as the result of monstrous attacks or spell costs, and cursed magic items no longer appear on treasure tables. So while the rules for them exist, the rules for actually getting them don't - so they for all practical purposes are no longer part of the D&D experience.

I hope that leaves you less confused.

"No. "

When you say something negative about something, one generally needs to say why it is bad, what can be done to improve it, or if it needs to get scrapped altogether.

Until I see those things, I will dismiss your opinion.

Now then, the problem with naming a project D&D is that the name is copyrighted, isn't it? Why run afoul of WotC's Lawyers of Unpleasant Doom? Why not excercise your creativity?

I mean, any name will sound better than GURPS, which sounds like the result of eating old Mexican food and rotten sushi. As in, "I've got the Gurps."

I was hoping that the sad, sort of cute emoticon showed that I was being contrary for the sake of it, not that it was a bad idea.

Obviously, I need neon signs that say 'Pithy Sarcasm Alert'.

Can we call it "real ultimate D&D"?
