Spells that fvcking kill people.

Post by Username17 »

There are lots of spells in D&D. In the PHB alone it goes on for one hundred and five pages of pure descriptions, and there's an entire 285 page book called the Spell Compendium that is just spells. Finding a spell you want can be very difficult.

So by request, here's a list of spells that will actually remove your opponents from combat from levels one through nine for Wizards and Sorcerers. If you keep a few of these on hand at each level, you'll probably have something level appropriate to do against your enemies.

There are also a crap tonne of other spells that serve functions as utility spells (knock, daylight), completely abusive utility spells (scry, shrink item), mobility spells (teleport, fly), buff spells (magic circle against evil, mindblank), and situational spells (shatter, slide). There will be times when you need to use these spells to complete adventures or crush your enemies super hard. But this is just a list of spells that you can use to remove enemies from play.

Level 1
  • color spray
  • grease
  • powerword pain (RotD)
  • seething eyebain (BoVD)
  • silent image
  • sleep
  • wall of smoke (SpC)

Level 2
  • blindness
  • cloud of bewilderment (SpC)
  • ghoul touch
  • glitterdust
  • lam's finger darts (BoVD)

Level 3
  • deep slumber
  • flashburst (SpC)
  • great thunderclap (SpC)
  • major image
  • mesmerizing glare (SpC)
  • nauseating breath (SpC)
  • shadow binding (SpC)
  • shivering touch (Cold Outside)
  • stinking cloud
  • vertigo field (PHB2)

Level 4
  • call of stone
  • charm monster
  • evard's black tentacles
  • fear
  • finger of agony (Complete Mage)
  • iceweb (Cold Outside)
  • phantasmal killer
  • solid fog
  • greater rebuke (SpC)
  • wall of good (SpC)
  • wings of flurry (RotD)

Level 5
  • baleful polymorph
  • call forth the beast (HoH)
  • cloudkill
  • flesh to ice (Cold Outside)
  • friend to foe (PHB2)
  • hold monster
  • illusory feast (SpC)
  • magic jar
  • touch of vecna (complete mage)
  • wall of force

Level 6

  • eyebite
  • flesh to stone
  • freezing fog (SpC)
  • freezing glance (Cold Outside)
  • heartfreeze (Cold Outside)
  • mudslide (Wet Outside)
  • programmed image

Level 7
  • forcecage
  • hiss of sleep (SpC)
  • evil glare (SpC)
  • finger of death
  • prismatic spray
  • final rebuke (SpC)

Level 8
  • mass charm
  • flensing (SpC)
  • maze
  • Otto's irresistable dance
  • polymorph any object
  • power word stun
  • trap the soul
  • wrathful castigation (SpC)

Level 9

Ugh. So much crap that you have to wade through to find this stuff.

Edit: Added stuff from "It's Cold Outside".

Hmm, I like. I like a lot.

You mind if I post this up at WoTC in it's complete form?

People need to see stuff like this; a primer for being an offensive caster.

Lucky for me, my archivist has Evard's at lvl 3 and Phantasmal Killer as a 4th lvl spell; although I want to avoid SoDs for as long as possible since my char does too much as it is.

That should change once the melee classes rebuild and the ranger replaces his shitty feats.

The ninja is pretty awesome however; it took him a bunch of levels to reach this though; so your comments on how characters should never have to "pay for power in advance, or delay payments for power till later" seemed to really hit home as I watched him play his almost crappy character. Now, he's got about 5-7 attacks a round that he has above average Precision damage with (seriously, he took a lvl of spell theif and rogue to keep his average damage as high as possible).

You rock, Frank. This'll make writing up spell lists for mages a whole lot quicker.

Go for it.

A few days from now I'll give a go to hacking out the list of utility spells that make people sit up and notice.

It would be a nice touch to have the listing include type of save allowed (if any). Just a thought!

What about curse of the putrid husk from BoVD? That's a nice 3rd level SoD.

You forgot Pyrotechnics, which can make large numbers of people blind as long as there's a fire. It usually has to be used in a first-strike situation, since your friends need cover from it, but it has Long range and so that's really easy to do. It's also great for infiltrating buildings or other places where you can obstruct line of sight. Basically a flash grenade, only magic and with a bigger area of effect.

  • "It's Hot Outside" = Sandstorm
  • "It's Cold Outside" = Frostburn
  • "It's Wet Outside" = Stormwrack
  • "D&D Joke Book" = Epic Level Handbook
  • "D&D Joke Book II" = Rules Compendium???
  • Any others? There should really be a reference thread for these.

The hilarious thing is that Skip actually loves sorcerers, but didn't want to be called a fanboy.

A solid list, I have to say. Even folk familiar with the PHB spells probably missed some of the SpC ones, or at least I found that to be the case for myself. It probably would be useful to asterisk the ones that don't use saving throws. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people post nonsense like, "Well, most wizards I've seen use saving throws so this build/class/etc must be balanced/underpowered because it doesn't have high save DCs." Bullshit. Enough spells and other options exist that going through saving throws are a choice, one that a smart spellcaster makes only when it's tactically viable. A spellcaster with weak DCs for some reason simply selects different spells - they don't just stand there and fizzle, reveling in their impotence. Seriously. Quickened solid fog > wail of the banshee if you're facing a brute mob with ironclad fort saves and no freedom of movement. Wail of the banshee = retarded in that situation, unless you're a fatespinner or something.

And I'd probably add daze to that list. For it's level, it gets the job done. A sorcerer with very limited spells at level 1 might be using a readied extended (/metamagic specialist) daze to great effect. Take that, douchebag kobold #22847! Sure, it's got an expiration date, but what do you expect from a cantrip? (Hint: ready the daze for the first non-movement action of the target; hopefully they'll walk up to an ally and then get dazed, allowing the ally to full attack/attack and move/whatever.)

Posted the OP and the post that lead to this at the WoTC boards; in the New Releases, Char Op and Spells and Magic boards.

I already got a hater for the list. :D

Don't be surprised if you get hit for spamming. The rule of thumb at WotC is you can cross post a thread to two forums; anything more than that makes the WizOs twitch.

Also, WotC doesn't like to see fucking in their posts. Clean that up.

Further, this list can't really be spliced into the initial (small) list Frank gave. Do one or the other, not both.
