My current computing capability is a handy netbook (HP mini something or other) that I got on sale for $150 about three years ago. It can 'technically' run WoW, and I did for the longest time so long as I avoided raids, which was a part of the game I didn't enjoy anyway. I have since quit WoW and don't necessarily have the free time for a lot of games anymore, much preferring tabletop when I find the time, but I like to have the option. I used to have a desktop, but the thing died a horrific death over a year ago, and in a month or so, I'll be looking at finally replacing it.

For example, for 400$, I got an Acer Aspire 5742-6823; 4 gigs of ram, 15.6inch screen intel I3-370M core, 640 GB Hard drive, and an integrated graphics card that runs Skyrim and Starcraft 2. It has a 7 hour battery life on lowest settings with the wireless card off, and managed to play me 5 hours of TV on my latest airplane flight.
To my knowledge, desktops are cheaper than laptops, and I already have a monitor (the rest of the old computer fried). Where/what can I get for the lowest price, with decent enough reliability and the capability of running Starcraft 2?

If you are willing to custom order parts for a desktop and build it yourself, you can get something insane for 500$. I know way more about the laptop market than the desktop market, but if you hang out on http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/

You should be able to put something together if you're decently competent.

Do note that my laptop runs both on minimum settings. Starcraft 2 ends up clippy in 8 zerg games, and Skyrim gives me some harsh-shit when I'm being flamed by a couple mages...to the point where I have to switch to melee, as targetting any sort of subtle magic is impossible.

We got ours from Cyberpower. Pretty nice machines, reasonable price. We were able to customize them- liquid cooling and a ton of fans. I got tired of my machine overheating and having a total meltdown, so I went a little apeshit. I think I have 5 fans.
