Online Tome Game

Post by Maxus »

Mentioned in the "I'm Doing Allright" thread. One of the characters is a Sword and Board Kantian Paladin.

Anyone know three good feats for that? I'm thinking Combat School, and then maybe one of Great Fortitude/Iron Will/Lightning Reflexes. And maybe Subtle Cut.

But there's a bit of a dearth of Sword and Board feats.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Well, Two-Weapon Fighting for shield bashing and such. Someone actually put together a sword-and-board Tome feat a long while back, but I can't find it anymore.

Shield Bash

You can perform a shield bash in place of any number of normal weapon attacks (including as part of a full attack). Make an attack roll, using the shield's enhancement bonus to AC as an enhancement bonus on the attack roll. The attack roll is computed as a normal melee weapon attack. If it hits, the shield deals 1d8 damage (or 1d10 if it's a great shield), plus the user's Strength modifier, and any enhancement bonus it has. Any other bonuses a character receives for melee attacks that could apply to this attack do. However, you do not receive your shield's bonus to AC for that round.
Edge: If you have the Edge on your opponent, you do not lose your shield's benefit to AC after performing a shield bash.

With that in mind, your Shieldbearer feat should look something like this:

Shieldbearer [Combat]
"And my shield."
+0: You may add your Strength modifier to your BAB for the purposes of working out whether you have the Edge for shield bashes, as well as the Edge for defending against bull rushes, trips and disarms.
+1: You add your shield's AC bonus to your touch AC as well.
+6: Any opponent struck by a shield bash must make a Fortitude save (DC 10+1/2 your character level+your Str mod). If they fail, they receive a penalty on all skill checks, ability checks and saves equal to your Str modifier for 1d4 rounds.
+11: As an immediate action, you may lose your shield bonus until your next action, but instead grant it to an adjacent ally for as long as you do not have it.
+16: Your shield bashes are so awesome that each time you hit with one, your opponent is automatically bull rushed, using your damage as the distance you have 'moved' (rounded up to the nearest 5ft), and you move with an opponent that you bull rush in such a way. If you actually perform a bull rush while using a shield, you receive a bonus on the roll equal to your Strength modifier (essentially, gaining it twice).

Oh yes. Thank you very much, Mister Sinister!

As a side note, I ran the first session tonight. It went well. Since I have the newbie, I'm breaking her in slowly with learn-as-you-go tutorials. This session was rolling dice and attack and damage, against zombies.

Next week will probably be spells and skills, and work quite smoothly Remember that CR 16 badass BBEG I made the thread about? Yeah, I hung onto his info. He bested both of the current PCs (because they forced a fight with him) and left them with piles of Str damage. So learning about healing spells is in order.

How come that feat and maneuver never made it into the pdf?

Okay, here's how it stands:

There's going to be 3 PCs in the game, two of them newbies.

Newb 1 played last night. Her character is an Aasimar Kantian Paladin, level 6. I'm having to teach her both Online roleplaying and DnD rules as we go along. I'm starting with her so she can teach Newb 2, who's her sister (Character undecided as far as I know. It'll be a while before we pick her up). I'm breaking her in slowly--this first session was the basics of combat (Attack, AC, Damage, etc.)

Next session will be skills, spells, saves, and whatever else pops up (She got a critical in this first session, so we explained those to her).

After that, I think we might go into the more detailed combat options, but we'll see.

The non-newb is a Fighter 5/Dragoon 1 (He liked the Dragoon class, so he went with that.)

The session began with a bunch of zombies in the streets with the BBEG introducing himself and making his challenge. The PCs took him up on it, and he beat them both down using non-lethal damage.

Things to do:

Treasure for newb 1
Pick the feats and explain why they work
Flesh out the setting and NPCs.

I might as well put my info up here. None of the players check this forum.

The BBEG is a Fighter 4/Bone Rider 5/Death Knight 5/Sword Wraith Paragon 2.

All told, that's about twelve feats, which he has spread out to cover various situations as needed.

Str 26
Dex 20
Con 22
Int 17
Wis 20
Cha 20

And here's the feat/progression.

Fighter
Bone Rider
Death Knight
Sword Wraith Paragon

1 x Mounted Combat, x Dreadful Demeanor
2 o Great Fortitude
3 x Master of Terror
4 o Lightning Reflexes

5
6 x Whispers of the Otherworld

7
8
9 x Elusive Target
10 o Elemental Aura (Fire)
11

12 x Blitz (May switch this out for something else), o Point Blank Shot
13
14 o Phalanx Fighter

15 x Danger Sense, o Alertness
16 o Iron Will

He has the dragon cohort and all that.

He also has a ton of class features. Which makes the Dragon that much scarier, with the assorted boosts from Bone Rider.

I did fudge the feats a bit; I swapped out the Spheres on Death Knight so he'd qualify for Elemental Aura.

The high stats are me extending the Wish Economy--he's been given a lot of Wishes as rewards for doing stuff. He put most of them into buffing himself up. He started with the Elite Array, believe it or not.

Also, the equipment is wide and varied. Demon armor, kite shield, sword...other weapons he'll be using from time to time.

Other notes:
His AC is...really high. As in, in the low 40's. And that's without deflection or natural armor. I'll see how the PCs grow and then decide whether to add one or both of those things.

I need to figure out some lesser sword wraiths he could command by way of finding a decent warrior with a following, killing him, and using Whispers of the Otherworld to raise him.

Edit: Oh, yeah, he also has full Blackguard casting with a nice bunch of bonus spells.

Setting:

Screw Points of Light. It appeals to a lot of people, but I'm not one of them. Fortunately, neither are the players.

I guess the closest thing I can get to a statement is, "The world is just awesome. It's not all sunshine and daisies, but it's still worth exploring."

Thus, the game happens in a corner of a continent, a region composed of five city-states who more or less get along.

It's more advanced than the usual fantasy (think maybe Renaissance. With magic smoothing out some of the wrinkles and spells being available for various things). In fact, a 'Renaissance' might be quite a good word for it, since the region used to be home to a more advanced culture which was led into decline in a very anti-climactic fashion (a dam broke, to make a long story short.)

There's remnants and ruins, which can provide some dungeoneering to the party. And they'll get some opportunities to do so, given that the people who can make stuff for them will not be working for gold.

The city-states also have their own features which I'll flesh out to introduce the players to the joys of the Wish Economy and barter system. ("You know that stinking, godforsaken swamp in the south? There's a kind of red lily which grows there. Bring me a handful of 'em.")

It's fairly recent work of mine, and, as far as I am aware, nothing I have written has made it into the PDF yet.

Because people started bitching when I started just throwing stuff in. And life got in the way of me making 0.7, which would have been Frank and K's stuff as one book, and "Everything Else" in another book.

Sinister: Sorry, dude. I swear it's not personal, I'm just a lazy/busy bastard.

Well, didn't run last night because one of the players had a stomachache. I didn't inquire too much about that.

Still, it gives me some time to polish what's coming up.

I'm thinking of eventually giving the party Koumei's Aerodactyl as a party transport. Maybe. I dunno. The Paladin has a ride, and the Dragoon seems to just be able to jump really quickly.
