Re: So the OGL drama hey

I am definitely assuming 5e has sold a bunch of their core books. Still, I concur that it is probable that 3.x had more revenue… but profit is presumably what the overlords care about. Selling PDFs with about 100% margins beats the piss out of books with 40% margins. Do they give PDFs free with the ...

Re: So the OGL drama hey

but 40k subscriptions lost comes out to over 1 million dollars lost annually. Not even hundreds of thousands? Oh, ho ho. Nothing that audacious! And while 5e is likely more profitable than 3e and 3.5 combined, I wouldn’t dare to think of comparing it to 4e, truly a titanium dragon of editions*. And...

Re: So the OGL drama hey

I wonder if we have an idea of how many subscribers that were paying for a subscription, to give us an idea of the figures 5e was actually raking in? I'm still of the assumption that 5E still less popular than 3.X D&D monetarily, and simply just brought wider exposure to the hobby, rather than ...

Re: [Let's Read] 5e Minigame and Subsystem Sourcebooks

The Bard Core Brawlers music battle one seemed interesting. Probably not enough meat on the bones for an entire campaign setting, but kinda fun. I kind of like where they were going with the modular heroic damage in Choose Your Weapons, though sure sounds like they took a dump on the worst class in ...

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?

So, the real critique of my big monsters being sessile is that they don’t really answer the problem of friendly NPCs who are just like you but better. The game assumes there are sessile monsters out there already and that’s neither here nor there. I think if you want endearing NPCs who can also wrec...

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?

I now want to make a setting where dragons are convinced that land ownership can be part of their hoard and they jealously protect their city as it is part of their wealth. So you get rival dragon kingdoms and act as agents of a dragon king/queen or as rebels or upstarts. Isn't that just Shadowrun?...

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?

I most like the zordon method. Handicap the Uber NPC in some way, usually in travel. There needs to be a reason the character who is more capable than the PCs doesn’t do their job yet still is supreme in their region of dominance, and limited mobility is a fine way to do it. In my game I currently r...

Re: [Let's Read] The Adventurer's Guide to the Bible

Nice review, as usual!

I am coming away very surprised at how decent the material looks, but I reckon I'd never touch it due to the baggage of the source material. Sad that their talents weren't aimed elsewhere as this was the first 5e product to pique my interest.

The regular old fit and broadly competent Marvel heroes do start feeling kinda samey after a while despite having unique power sets and sometimes the fun happens when the psion gets strength drained to 0 and has to repeatedly fling himself back to town with telekinesis. Please tell me Professor X d...

FWIW, probably for the last 10 years I have made it a habit that before I hit post on anything that I spent more than a minute on, I would select all and copy so that I could paste it again if something got fucky in the posting process. That reflex has saved my posts a few times for sure.

Re: The Biden Administration (No Lago)

From what I've read and watched about Holodomor, it sounds like a genocide in that it was an intentional amplification of famine along with other punishments and refusal of aid, and that it was intended in part to punish and remove some Ukrainian leaders to keep their people in line. The reason it d...

Re: Wizards informally announces 5.5 edition

Jokes on all you fools. They started production on 6e the day 5e was released. That's why they never made much material for 5e; WotC wanted 10 years to perfect 6e, the first multiple of 3e, the chosen one, the bringer of ends, the walker between gaps, the social conflict system of gods, the - I'm ge...

Now I’m imagining a drunken house party with folks trying to make shapes with tangrams (I get that it was probably a coincidental inspiration, not an actual inspiration from observation). I don’t know if being drunk would inhibit or improve my ability to make shapes but it seems like something worth...

Re: Magic Item Creation

Isn't that just Dungeon Meshi, but an actual RPG? Ehhh, Dungeon Meshi isn't competitive cooking though. It's a fine setting for the type of game I was proposing, but if you consider the story like an adventure, their cooking is kind of just totally extraneous from an RPG standpoint. There's no need...

Collecting ingredients is the kind of lizard brain fun I enjoy in video games and find abhorrent in table top games. A video game at least has some inventory management built in. My understanding is that RPG mechanics aren’t patented. Usually you can pick the random number generation methods that seem appropriate for the kind of distribution you desire. I am always super squeamish about glitzy new systems because almost invariably their inventors have zero fuckin clue how ma...
