In an alternate universe: You unleash your mega-attack that should utterly destroy the enemy. The smoke clears, and the enemy general has become a steaming pile of meat. Well, that was kind of anti-climactic. Enemy makes an attack on a PC and the PC dies because they didn't have Death Ward. Now they...

So, this would function similarly to the Mage magic system, replacing the Arcanas with the Color Pie?

Actually, people who want Fighters to cut buildings/mountains in half are going to accept any explanation that's thrown at them... or even no explanation beyond "This guy works out. a lot." Because that's the sort of thing that we want. The reason why people come up with these explanations...

How has D&D done this ... ? It hasn't and that's why this thread exists? but that doesn't mean that it's not possible, we can go through the list of GTFO abilities and just think of a way to change them so that they're more of a roadblock as opposed to some impassable barrier. Like making it so...

Tussock's actually right about this. "Fixing" the fighter (as far as 3E D&D is concerned) involves changing things at a higher level than messing around with a single class. We know that the game has things that straight say, "Fuck you," to anyone stupid enough to think swing...

Depends on the spell list. Depends on the Feats. Depends on whether or not monsters have arbitrary immunities and if you could get around those defenses by "assessing weakness."

Depends on a lot of things... but I'd say that the concept is fine.

Devil's Advocate: Sarevok was a demi-god and a lot of his power came from being a bhaalspawn. That's still sort of true in BG2.

Now what the Wrathzogs, Elennsar's, RPGsiters, and other associated fighter fappers of the world actually want is to, 1) come to the table without the ability to overcome challenges 2) overcome challenges anyway. While I would love to butt horns with you again after being so sorely misrepresented.....

and if i tell you that i'm personally sure that this is due to the fact that people rather fix rules than drop them? I don't see how this changes anything. Regardless of the reason, most people seem to be more comfortable with keeping the fighter around in some form or fashion than dropping it. Sho...

It seems like most people want Fighters. i keep reading that, but have never seen any kind of actual proof. I've seen way more threads and debate on how to "Fix" the fighter than people who want to drop the concept entirely. That kind of implies that people want the fighter even if they'r...

Healthy amounts of Arbitrarium.

Alternatively, don't let your players play Wizards if you don't want them doing crazy shit.

Also, the more stuff you prevent, the more likely you end up tricking the group into thinking that they're going up against an epic level caster.

Do you honestly think that just because you give the Fighter wings of flying, his go-to tactic for any fight is "Fly over it and drop alchemical fire on it" rather than using those wings to get into melee when the enemies are flying? If it allows you to Instantly Kill things with minimal ...

Dawg, it doesn't matter because we're not playing an MMO. We're playing a TTRPG and if you provide someone with Engineering, they're going to put Rockets on their Glider and divebomb enemies with packs of dynamite. You can't do that in WoW, but I can guarantee that'd happen in D&D because I came...

Your base abilities better be pretty bad-ass if they're gonna compete against Flight, Teleportation, Mind Control, Companions, and All of your out of combat utility.

Engineering lets him make fun utility toys like ... At this point, you've made an Engineer Class. Is there a game that does "fighter" well? Or at least acceptably? It's all relative. The biggest reason why The 3E Fighter looks so bad is because you can compare him to the 3E Wizard (or any...

I vote for BOTH. Flavor Text needs to steer away from using Jargon while Mechanics should use as much of it as possible (like how precisely worded Magic Cards are) and intelligently.

It's hard for me to listen to this kind of story. How can I answer his assessment that "D&D is a bad game"? I asked him afterwards if he saw any problems with the monk class itself and his answer is that the monk was somehow both very strong ("lots of abilities") and very we...

Are we forced to use Wizards for this exercise? Can we switch to Clerics and/or Druids instead?
