Shadzar, this is BASIC adventure-craft. Maybe somebody else found out about the same prize as you did and is trying to get there before you do. Maybe they're bad people who are going to misuse the macguffin or maybe they are just going to make your expedition fail because you're not the ones getting...

I have never ever heard of a real group interviewing people to fill holes in the party. were all your players making characters in a vacuum? did you ever have one character that was made, and then others joined and th...

I have never ever had a group that interviewed people to fill holes in the party. I have never ever heard of a real group interviewing people to fill holes in the party. The closest I have heard was in Knights of the Dinner Table when they're taking on hirelings for an adventure when they're sure th...

Re: Dystopian Future

So I'm trying to write a dystopian future for a game where the corporations grown so powerful as to take over the government. There are vast gulfs between the rich and the poor, with the wealthy never aging and living a hedonistic decadent lifestyle and the poor are their slaves in all but name. Th...

The Stinger has a power that lets him take damage in exchange for burrowing into the earth? That sounds like a particularly shitty way to cheat parties out of treasure. "The stinger is down to 3HP. He leaps into the ground and disappears. This kills him, but now you have to dig him up if you wa...

Tussock: My question is that, assuming you are right for a moment, what does it matter? Nothing matters, if you want to get all reductionist, but this thread was started when someone asked what the fuck to do in a typical murderocracy like D&D when the PCs break some trivial bylaw and the lowbi...

Tussock: My question is that, assuming you are right for a moment, what does it matter? Fantasy game settings are already a mishmash of anachronistic elements with elements that never existed in the first place, bathing in a stew of modern sensibilities. We do this because it's more fun to do it tha...

Morality in genre literature and especially roleplaying games based on genre literature is notoriously muddy and protagonist-centric. If a Xambrian is the main character of the story, then the quest against the Torquarans is probably going to be justified and reinforced with some kick-the-dog moment...

What? Whaaaaat? Examples aside, are you seriously claiming that the Vatican is actually concealing serious material, like the knowlege of the kitten-eating reptilian humanoid Nazi occultist conspiracy, or something? Assuming that such a thing exists at all and the Vatican knows about it, yes. That'...

I agree with Frank. Trying to customize monsters is always time consuming to the point where it's only worth doing if it's a tentpole encounter to the campaign, otherwise you're spending lots of time on an encounter that will be over in a few rounds and won't be remembered by the party after a few s...

Can't stand the pace of PBP, personally. My best online gaming has been play by chat, with good descriptive participants who aren't afraid to lean away from mechanics in the name of making the game flow.

It also encourages metaplots, where a developer decides that their story is more important than the story home groups are going to write. This position is asinine.

As for skipping easy combat: If you ever find your self in a position where you want to skip combat because it's too routine and too easy, you need to reconsider your encounter design philosophies. If you think a proposed houserule is stupid, why suggest it?

Alternately: If you think a proposed houserule is stupid, why suggest it and not automatically declaim it by saying "Some people may like this rule but it's really pretty fucking stupid when you get down to it"
