Yeah, the money quote you're cutting out is this: The system doesn't need to go into weird experimentalist storygame shit, it just needs to look like something that was designed in the 21st century - or at least the late 90s. My suggestion was one of modernization , rather than to specifically make...

Relevant quote: The bottom line however is that I don't know why I would even check out Magic Shoe. Ars Magica made some ground breaking innovations in the late 80s, and the name carries some weight. If people said they had modernized Ars Magica, I would be interested to say the least. It might be ...

I've just seen people, even you Frank, bandy the word "modern" around. (I'm thinking of your criticism of Ars Magica, that). This isn't a criticism of your critique, just that people use it, and it's sometimes clear or unclear what it means. Relevant quote: The bottom line however is that ...

What is considered to be "modern" RPG design?

I've heard this phrase used over the years. At some point, I knew what it meant, now after several years of not buying the latest games... What is considered "modern rpg design?" Perhaps this is hard to define and nebulous, however, I'm curious to see what other people have to say on this ...

Unrelated: I found the thread where Holden defends keeping linear chargen geometric progression by claiming that "We have a policy not to give people bad rules just because they think they want them." The weird thing here is where he's being a total douche about having made a mechanic tha...

Good analysis. One thing that gets me about the rape in the intro is that when it came out in 2009... I was on the Big Purple RPG.net a lot. I don't recall anyone complaining about it. And then circa 2014 it became this taboo "too far" thing. Maybe I remember things wrong. But it's funny ...

At times I just feel shitty. I love rpgs but they all feel so flawed. Tome stuff isn't very organized or easy to use, last I checked.

Are any RPG's worth playing?

Honest question. I wonder some days. It seems that it's impossible for a game not to be created without somehow forgetting basic math, not doing the play testing, or serious fluff<-->mechanic mismatches.

Thoughts?

In my opinion it solves none of the fundamental setting and gameplay problems and mostly does not even attempt to. I can elaborate later, if anyone cares. I was never motivated enough to dig into mechanics below basic gameplay assumptions. Also I'd note that it is a walking corpse of an edition, ju...

My memory is flimsy, but I think Holden's breaking point was when Chung dared to rebel against linear chargen coupled with exponential advancement. Exalted 3rd Edition?

I figured this could be a catchall topic to discuss Exalted 3E and it's various supplements. So far we have the corebook, "Arms of the Chosen" which explains the new evocation system, a dragon blooded book, and a lunar book. Of the people left playing 3E, it seems the DB and Lunar books ha...

I have played Risus in the past. I used it as an introductory rpg session for my dad and both my in-laws (all in their 60s). They all had a good time and had a significantly better understanding of tabtletop rpgs afterwards.

Eh. Arguing aside, I didn't like the book. I came out of it as a ST thinking, "There are no stories to tell here" It was all about the books... Which was great if you wanted to retell the stories of the DL series.

Just wanted to chime and say (jedi and Star wars off topicness aside) this thread makes for really good reading. I identified a number of the problems Frank has with the game back when I played it in the late 90s, but I didn't really have the words to describe what felt wrong. Great thread!

Mandatory Movement in a D20 Game?

So, for context, I'm running a Star Wars Saga edition game. (yes, yes, I know the issues with it, It's what I own from years ago, so it's what I'm using. And many houserules for balance etc.) One thing I've noticed D20 games in general, as well as Saga are bad about (at least in my experience) is th...

Dang Bro, Paizo's at it again with a CRPG Kickstarter

So I got this email today about a new Paizo CRPG based on their KingMaker adventure path. I was unfortunately a backer of the original MMO debacle, which, I think is still moving along on fumes somehow. I googled it and yes, it is somehow around. http://www.mmorpg.com/pathfinder-online A separate st...

3rded! The Fluff is fun, but the rules... ouch. Most people who play a while have to heavily house rule the game.

To get us back on track, RPG.net isn't nearly as influential as it used to be. People really have moved on to other websites, or they just aren't on the net talking about video games as much as they used to be.

Am I the only one who thinks "jesus fuck a ponies game for grown ass men?"

Then again, targeting it to young girls would grow the hobby, which in the long run is a good thing.
