Personally, I'm glad there's an uptick in activity right now. At the moment I'm trying to get closer to actually finishing my heartbreaker. Ancient gave me the go-ahead to use Space Madness! as the base system and I'm hacking away at that.

Sailors or soldiers or miners or whoever blowing their coin on drink, flesh, etc. before they go back out on another "adventure" is a pretty old thing, and it certainly is a big trope in fantasy. So I can see a lot of people viewing that as an integral part of being an adventurer. Hell, lo...

I suppose depending on the patron that might not be particularly outlandish.

The part where you have territory and "legitimate businesses" and corpse disposal pig farms and uses for the proceeds of villainy. Not a mechanic, specifically, but the approach.

Sorry chief, the G&T was sarcastic. "Gritty" means single digit hit points and "tactical" means no rules for anything other than rolling for damage. Just a pet peeve of mine.

This is why OSR needs to be put in a gritty, tactical catapult and flung into the sun.

I feel like GTA5 hit a pretty simple formula: owning property gets you money and unique quests. And free lapdances maybe?

"Go get this rare component" is literally the oldest plot hook in human history and while it's obviously not so interesting anymore on its own, it does at least give a basic, solid reason to do... well, anything in a story. It's a pretty big foundation of the whole "adventuring" ...

I saw a ridiculous game PDF with design issues and that same 3d model abomination. Against my better judgement I went back to that Glyphs RPG site to see if it was the same designer and hoooooo boy. You better cinch up your saddle for this one, rough riders, the Spirituality & Philosophy section...

That was my immediate reaction as well, but I went down the rabbit hole that is the rest of the book and I am both confused and disturbed.

One question, why?

Honestly, I always appreciate the folly/ambition of an RPG trying to create some sort of generative oracle system, but holy shit are the graphics just ass.

Anecdotally, I think most gamers want verisimilitude , even if that includes things that aren't actually realistic. The other side of that coin is that the grimderp OSR crowd want "realism" but that really means a sort of stylized level of detail that approximates reality in a very limited...

Dominions recommendation

Hey all, a friend of mine wants to start playing some strategy games with me. I suggested Dominions, as I futzed around with a little bit some years ago. He's totally new to the franchise, but more experienced with strategy games in general. Is there a particular edition of Dominions that would be b...

There's always something appealing about breaking stuff up into groups of three. I've been playing Dead Cells a lot lately and I really like their trinity: Brutality, Tactics, and Survival. These are functionally Melee, Ranged, and Shields, but a little more nuanced and lots of combinations and inte...

Ahh, I see people are wearing them out. That makes sense, and I suppose if fantasyland has shitty steel that would happen faster. But... ehh. I don't know that it ultimately matters. I suppose in a fail forward scenario if you fuck up your lockpicking roll then a previously nonexistent beartrap insi...

Maybe it's not important, but does the whole "bag of disposable lockpicks that break when you fail to pick" trope have any TTRPG provenance, or is it just a vidya game thing? I mean... I've never broken a lockpick even when I've jammed so hard that the retaining clip on the barrel broke. I...

I assume you're shooting for something thematically fun like children exploring simple machines? Otherwise it's the same problem as making a shy person roleplay a gregarious bard. Simple machines may not be "simple" at all to a lot of players.
