Topic: Whatever Happened to CAN?

It's linked earlier in the thread, but basically, I believe CAN works like this: When you attack someone, you roll a die, add a number, maybe several numbers, and compare it to a table. This tells you what level of effect you have on your enemy. If you roll low enough, you don't hurt them, and if yo...

I think that the appropriate solution to 'Magic and other Cool Abilities' breaking the economy is to make it clear that it is almost always literally not worth the time of anyone with said abilities to use them to mess with the economy, because it's much faster to just stab monsters in the face to g...

I just realized that CAN is kind of like a more generalized version of this:

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who didn't realize that until just now.

CAN is "Combat Advantage Number" or something. I last saw it in 'Status effects should make you easier to kill'.

Let's presume this is a skill feat and 'dim' is the rank 9 ability. +9 - 9 ranks +5 - 20 DEX halfling rogue or something +3 - 0 rank bonus from the feat +2 - masterwork tool you would pass a DC 20 on a roll of a 1. The ability isn't even as good as invisibility. Also, this: http://www.dnd-wiki.org/w...

So, higher levels. Like, say, 9 ranks in hide/stealth/whatever? Invisibility is only a second level spell, which your wizard/sorcerer/whatever cohort could cast on you if you really wanted. You're a sneaky character; not being seen is your primary character trait.

I thought the point was that the fighter class did sorta work ... for the first couple levels or so.

Well, you *could* make "cursed for you but not for me" by making it do something that wouldn't impeded the intended user, but would impede others, like scythes that radiate negative energy for undead.

Major reasons for advancement ... Breaks learning the game into smaller chunks ... And this right here is the part that I think is the most important. I consider myself past the point of learning the basics, but I still appreciate the concept of a "tutorial level" for a character; maybe e...

I guess it all comes down to whether you can consistently hit on a full power attack.

I kind of was, but in support of it. My vision would have many separate condition tracks, but they would each advance your vulnerability to all of them.

I wasn't actually saying that you should, but I think it should go something like this: Each condition reduces your CAN, and the lower your CAN, the nastier the conditions you pick up. e.x.: You fail your save against flare, and are now dazzled, giving you a -1 penalty on attack rolls, spot checks, ...

I could see that working and making sense; being dazzled distracts you, so you can't dodge as well, in addition to making it harder to notice mental intrusion, or to brace yourself against wind.

I thought the consensus went the opposite way; that +2 with +1d6 fire, cold and electrical is better than a flat +5.

sigma: I think your mistake is viewing it as merely "throwing extra SP at a skill". Skill points mean that you are putting a lot of effort into the skill, as opposed to just having a high ability score, buying a masterwork tool, and maybe getting heroism cast on you, or using a magic item ...

Well, I suppose you could have "Mind" and "Body" as your stats, and then cover the details with traits like "Absentminded Intellectual: +2 bonus to knowledge skills and -2 penalty to will saves and perception checks"

The DMs guide has dragonhide for armor, and the draconomicon has a plethora of 'dragoncraft items', with their own special magical effects. These seem like they might be a good fit for the role of rare weapons to supplement stone-age armament, or at least a good start.

About to level up

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this

My group is convinced that the tome feat "Greater Teleport" is inappropriate to take as my feat at sixth level. Please either help me convince them otherwise or help me understand their side.
