I'd rather make it so that sword and axe are more "Which of these two ways of doing it do you prefer?" and hammer/club/mace would either be "No, really, I'm not shedding blood.", or only good to carry as an exception vs. things where it counts (you might count mail as an example ...

So making toteing a golf bag a hassle - even if you can physically carry a dozen swords by weight, carrying them in a readily accessible and comfortable manner is another story.

Bringing up the "Dark Side" is probably a bad example. In most source material that bothers with corruption, being corrupted screws you over as well as being morally wrong. Usually, it screws you over by robbing you of your free will and sense of self over time, and this is naturally refl...

You would like the game, rather than the GM, to say this? I'm not sure I'd want to GM a game where the rules required that I tell only certain kinds of stories and that I had to utilize every element of a character's backstory over the course of a campaign. I'd like to have the game say that the ba...

If you make different weapons useful in different situations, so that sometimes you want to use a spear even if you specialized in a sword, then you really encourage not overspecializing.

The problem is, "I would, therefore you should too." doesn't make sense for either arguement. Nor is there any way to take ckafrica's post as meant as any kind of "Respectful disagreement", however broadly one defines respectful in that context. In this context, it is meant to be...

Then come up with a reason why using Alternate Attack is worth it. You use a spear in certain circumstances in fighting with medieval weapons in our world, and someone who isn't prepared to get a spear and use it is someone who is unprepared to deal with it. Having characters use as many different s...

Because in a rpg, I would like the game to say "Yes, deciding on whether or not your character has a sister/family/whatever might actually come up and stories will be told about that." rather than have a paragraph with things like Alhandra having a tattoo being their only acknowledgement t...

The problem with that reasoning is that while specializing in "axe and sword and mace" might be inefficient, spears and bows, for instance, have entirely different uses so that you might want to be throughly familiar with spear and sword even if you can't use them at the same moment.

We kind of need to decide if we mind people specializing - if you can get away with sword (axe, mace, hammer, whatever) and spear (for reach), and maybe a bow if you're not focused on melee, why should that be a problem? 'tis what historical knights did. Now, we're not modeling them, but its not &qu...

Something that the issue of having two very different sets of barbarians as well as the pentarchy (the five civilized kingdoms) kind of brings up - I don't know if we need to make any really defining decisions now, but it would be good to know if it will matter... Is religion a serious concern here?...

Congradulations on giving a perfect example of of why trolling hurts this site, ckafrica. Not a single word in that has anything to do with anything other than your inability to accept that gee, maybe someone -doesn't- agree with you and that this site isn't your private playground to insist that ev...

Perhaps specialization a bonus of (assuming a modifier system from 1-20 or so) +2 to "one set of rolls of your choice with the weapon" (not fixed) - so you could apply +2 to parrying, or +2 to attacking, or +2 to tripping people (if using the weapon would assist), or whatever. That way you...

When you keep insisting over and over and over again that there ought to be a mechanical effect and that not having the best mechanical effect ITSELF is a punishment that needs to be compensated for, then its very hard to seriously think of a reward being discussed that isn't just saying "Okay,...

I don't know if I'd go that far. Just because "Magic" doesn't work on its own doesn't mean that we need to have all the useful characters be badass fighters.

Its doable - but its also doable to make the overall set of things mages have useful without being great in combat.

Ick. Having "Fuck" turn into "fvck" or "hug", fine. Having it turn into "You have been banished from the Den." (even only for say, five minutes) is ridiculous.

I would say that if we have a specialist "magic user", what it really is is part of the loremaster/scholar/geek class, rather than something distinct. That means that even a "mighty wizard" still relies on his other skills and magic happens to be a skill he has, rather than his s...

Because it's hard to teach people to roleplay and to create coolness and fun. I can't think of a way to do it, can you? Describing it and showing examples of it wouldn't hurt, however. In a 300-odd page book, if you can't spare a few pages, you must have one heck of a detailed rule system. So the r...

No kidding - but having some spells that can be used within the time frame of combat might not be unreasonable.

But it would probably be more stuff that is useful in say, using a trebuchet, and less replacements for the same.

No. I want you to help in coming up with answers - initial thoughts by either me or you (those helping) will be weighed and those that sound best will be used (at least until this is tested). "So, what do you think people should do with spears? How about _____?" would be met with "Hmm...

If you meant that to begin with, why was the idea of having a mechanical effect treated as a better bonus/reward? Because that (nonmechanical and maybe even nongame) makes sense - literally doing something "without reward' when "Reward" is defined as "anything desirable" mea...

Well, I'm assuming that we're not trying to model Howard's world in particular (it hasn't been clarified).

But yeah.

Why would you recommend the combat system (I ask as I go to take a better look)?
