Re: It's Electric! (Does D&D have a Pikachu?)
MM 3 has the shredstorm, which is pretty much just a fancier storm elemental, but it exists. There are a ton of 3.x constructs that have electric abilities stapled on to them. I recall the MM2 having several of them. The Zeugalak is an electric themed demon/devil & has the classic teleport with ...

Re: What's your favorite kind of high level "friendly" NPC?
The question as a whole seems kind of non-starter because high level friendly NPC is pretty much an archetype among themselves with only so much variation between them. The only real variations on the idea is how they help the party, how often they help the party, & what is their connection to t...

Re: Why are Tome Feats a problem?
From my archive binge of the gaming den, Tome feats ended up generally being considering a failure since they didn't really solve the problem with feats in 3rd edition. There still ended up being feat taxes that every martial character took to make their math work, still ended up eating a lot of tex...

Re: yet another yet another stealth thread [Spellbound]
Just read through the thread. I like what I read. I presume that Stealth is not the main focus of the game and is just an option the players can perform so things seem well enough in a usable order in a vacuum (Lots of little details can change when other parts of the system are factored in, such as...

Re: mechanics for armor quality / Soak + armor coverage
However, the thing I like most is that there's no to-hit roll, which makes attack resolution lightning quick. I think it used to be orthodoxy around here that you needed a to-hit roll to prevent school busses full of kindergartners with sticks from killing vampires, but high damage reduction values...

Re: mechanics for armor quality / Soak + armor coverage
I include easier ways for the player characters to get damage reduction in potentially meaningful quantities on their character if they so desire in the 3.x games that I run, albeit I don't have it prebuilt into the armor. That way, players who want to have DR can easily get it if they want to do th...

A little late, there was a earlier thread discussing the role iterative attacks vs one big attack should have in a D&D-like game, linked above, along with some other related discussion.

Re: Alternative to Cure spells and Lay on Hands
That pushes healing ahead at early levels but then healing will be behind where it is at at 11th level, where your cure spell heals for 60 points of damage while the original heal spell heals for 110 points of damage (unless you aren't getting rid of the original heal spell, which will cause a jump ...

Re: D&D, multiple attacks, and an alternative
Assuming a standard D&D environment, attack rolls should be simple because most likely that is going to be how you are going to have monsters attack and then by a certain necessity of not being lame, you are going to need a wide variety of monsters & the ability to use multiple of them at th...

In the Book of Exalted Deeds, there is a vow of Chastity feat. +4 bonus on will saves against charm & phantasm spells & abilities. Lose the benefits if you have any sexual contact with any other creature, so masturbation is okay. On the topic of an intergenerational campaign with non-heteros...

I forgot my log-in to that forum. Why was NigelWalmsley banned? I did a quick sign in & checked. No obviously locked topic that clearly points to why they were banned. So either the reason was purged or because it was a smaller thing that doesn't reveal itself with 2 minutes of searching (Some ...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
Ok, so gnolls are gnome/trolls (and thus hyenas), and driders are half drow and 2/3 spider, but I can't think of any other popularish monster like that of the top of my head. I'm guessing there's be more along that line, but D&D just forgot about them over the years? (Excepting werewolves and o...

Re: Arguing about Pokemon Tabletop Evolution (WIP)
Haven't read the thread fully yet (I intend to, but I've been busy). Quick comment to give my opinion on rolling knowledge: From a pure mechanical perspective, I don't think people need to roll for knowledge skills outside of the occasional rare knowledge roll that may happen in an adventure path. F...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
Someone should do an OSSR of how the Tome hype machine worked on the den sometime. I think it has something to do with Username17's fun writing style, but that can't be the whole reason because even his later projects weren't nearly as popular here. Perhaps the appeal to homebrewing, that for a tim...

Re: Vampire 5th Edition is Bad: The Movie
Decided to look into it, and it isn't so much a set in stone rule as much as it is a strongly encouraged guideline, to the point that it is carries a condescending tone towards people who wouldn't mind if combat goes past 3 rounds. Three Turns and Out We strongly recommend ending conflicts after rou...

Re: Vampire 5th Edition is Bad: The Movie
This starts off with a bunch of vague thoughts and musings, so it takes a few pages of skimming to get to any actual rules. The lulziest part here is the bold new rule to automatically end combat after three rounds so it doesn't drag on and get boring. I'd also like to see a picture of that rule if...

The tome index thread looks fine to me now. In a similar tone, the formatting of the main content posts in the following threads have been horribly distorted, or at least it has been on my end, with the text slowly growing in size throughout the post until it reaches the point a single letter takes ...

Re: What were Gygax & Arneson & pals looking at for early D&D?
Building off of what Whipstitch said, I feel like the reason many campaigns are just Tolkien mayhem is twofold but goes back to the primary point that a lot of GM material is very called in, if it is even there at all. First, while many books have a GM section, I often feel like they don't actually ...

I'll give a stab at answering the questions 1) The timing order seems to describe a trigger for when an ability activates in response to something that just happened or is happening. A short organization entry is useful as a way to communicate how the monster is best used as while skimming through stuff. Knowing that Monster ABA is supposed to be fought by itself is useful information, while knowing that monster ZXZ is a pack hunter and operates in groups of 3-7 helps DMs use th...
