If I used a miscast system in an RPG, the chance of a severe miscast would increase based on spell power, the effects would be consistent and bounded (no "your head asplode" result) and not party-hosing.

Miscast risks as a balancing system for magic

Warhammer-derived RPGs typically use the possibility of miscasts as a balancing lever for powerful spells. How viable is this? Is it worth an analysis across multiple systems?

combat in which one participant cannot be damaged Fighting invulnerable beings sounds like an interesting topic on which either bad or good advice could be given. Be it good, or bad, in this case? The advice is functional. At the beginning of combat, the MC decides whether or not an opponent can ac...

Combat Combat in Space Madness uses an action point system. Each character has 5 action points to spend, with a different cost for each activity. Each round, the MC determines which characters have the initiative, either through speed of attack, preparedness, or offensive performance. Initiative ca...

To define some example challenges:

Covering up a masquerade breach
Deposing the Prince of Atlanta
Fighting Sabbat shovelheads
Negotiating with vampires from a neighbouring city

These are typical tasks for a vampire conspiracy, which is the mode of play I would design the game around.

Certainly one of the issues is that when you say something like "I'm playing an Elvish Ranger" in D&D or "I'm playing a Street Samurai" in Shadowrun, that tells the other players what your character can contribute and also it tells the other players a good deal about how you...

Beginning development of religions with aesthetic elements is good advice. Establishing a distinct style for each religion will enable ease of development later. What happens if there are more than two parties involved in the combat, and two characters who both have initiative fight each other? Having initiative in Space Madness! is not like having the higher initiative value in Dungeons & Dragons or Shadowrun . It has nothing to do with who goes first....

Confirmation: Priority goes to the party with initiative, who is considered to have acted first, unless the MC decides otherwise based on circumstances (such as visibility)?

Logical solution.

They have to wait to see if they make it to cover in time. It's closer to a cutscene than than something you can rigorously plan out with mathematical precision. Please provide an example. If not, you may consider removing it entirely and assuming a flat soak rate or letting players assign soak to any mental attribute. The latter option is a simple solution...

Most RPGs treat combat as a central mechanic. Therefore, unless combat is less central, playability takes priority over accuracy to historical magic. I presume this hypothetical RPG will take the latter route On another note, most Western fantasy incorporates only the surface elements of the culture...
