Does anyone want to talk about 'Leveling' and the pros and cons it brings to D&D? Opinion: I dislike the idea of 'levels'. The whole carrot-and-stick motivation / drip-feeding 'rewards' to the players / Skinner box setup doesn't sit well with me. I like 'unlocking' stuff and powering up as much ...

@FrankTrollman: What's your reasoning for why player's shouldn't be required to pick alignment at chargen? I thought the reason it was included in the 1st place was as part of the 'backgrounds & history' part of making your char seem like a person who existed before Level1.

@ angelfromanotherpin : The Dabbler is allowed more creativity, his magic is less restricted, as he isn't bound by preconceived notions of 'this spell' or 'that spell', i.e. the rules of magic are loose guidelines for him? There is a big aspect of 'luck' here as befitting of bards and rogues. The Ad...

You're really going to try and convince me that a post in which you quoted me three times and other posters not at all wasn't directed primarily at me? Yes. I refrained from quoting other people initially because they either didn't give me a lot to work with, and / or I was afraid quoting them woul...

@ Emerald : You make a good point, but I was thinking something along the lines of "Time Stop - Stops time around you long enough to take 5 actions. (Cast Time: 5 Turns.)" The turns don't have to be your turns (I'm not sure how the PHB would word it...) I think it would be interesting to r...

@ Cervantes , @ MGuy : I was looking at Polaris as angelfromanotherpin suggested, and it has the kinds of ideas that I'm looking for / leaning towards. In Polaris players use keyword phrases to set a scene; the powers of the GM are distributed amongst each player in the group, which I really like, w...

Forum fisticuffs it is then. En garde! Why, yes, I do get irate when people nominally talking to me flat-out ignore what I write to have pretend conversations with imaginary people instead. This is a forum. I can speak to the readers at large and appeal to the crowd for input or other perspectives. ...

I've been thinking about how to make shooting gameplay interesting using cards and dice for a homebrew of my own, and your dilemma seems like a good excuse for me to get some feedback and maybe give you some ideas, so here is my 2¢: Determining Hits: Go with the big dice pools. Like 5-10 dice. The d...

@Chamomile: You seem offended. I'm sorry you were offended. No one is attacking you. Relax. I'm not trying to get into forum fisticuffs with you, so I'll be brief: the 1st quote of yours I used because it described a phenomenon that I've experienced in D&D (tons of irrelevant details) sometimes ...

Some Ideas: 1) DON'T encourage or support the GM rail-roading the game. What's the point of role-playing when all of my choices take me to exactly the same spot (minus the occasional loss of limb or life)? If the game session or 'module' is going to have the same outcome regardless of whether I was ...

I think a role-playing game is or should be: engaging in improvisational story-telling, with a set of agreed upon rules for 1) managing who has narrative authority at any given time; 2) resolving the intra-story conflicts that emerge from the shared creative experience (e.g. saving throws, stat chec...

The thing I don't understand is... if the rules (i.e. what make it a game) aren't specifically geared towards role-playing (the improv, or acting-out), does the label fit? In this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERc0-mp75oY) these nerds put forward the idea that very little / next to nothing ...

I'm coming back to this because I wanted to refine the question I was trying to ask:

What do you mean by role-playing game?

And following that:

What rules do you think encourage, facilitate, cultivate the kind of role-playing you want to see in your games?

Cards. You put combat actions on cards. You can even have them printed out on nice card stock, and color coded per player. This requires some prep, but no actual writing at the table. Players play cards face down during the declaration phase, and they're flipped in initiative order. Any systems tha...

I think there has been a misunderstanding... I'm looking for rules that apply to the meta-game of role-playing. Having the GM penalise people or reward people for being more into playing a certain way or not, really it's just a failure of the game mechanics to encourage the desired play as a normal ...

(Actual) Rules For Role-Playing?

I was wondering if any of you wonderful people had encountered or read any (actual) rules for role-playing? In my experience, limited though it is, most RPG books tend to be tonnes of setting fluff, some rules for task or conflict resolution (what dice to roll, what modifiers to add, what stats are ...

@Thaluikhain: The moon is one of the archetypal symbols of the night and darkness, and was associated with all manner of evil spirits and witches and monsters, etc.
