Alright, thanks for the input guys. So, unifying mechanics makes no sense and removes the ability to make abilities feel different. Got it. So, 7+ Hit Rate. That has you missing about 30% of the time. 6 miss numbers also happens to be a standard deviation, so that works out nicely. So, that makes th...

Hit means confirm a level appropriate ability vs an opponent. It might play similar to Tome. Alot of it still in the air, but its going to play similar to levels 1-10 in 3e with a fixed RNG and balanced classes. For spellcasters this means spells, for martials this means maneuvers, etc. Alright, so ...

Designing a d20 RNG

Alright guys! I'm working a Fantasy Heartbreaker that is based on DnD 3e. One of the first parts of my project was figuring out the RNG. One of the problems with DnD 3e was the math, with oddly divergent progressions of saves and attack, as the levels went higher, the math got worse. So, I'm startin...

The problem with 5e's Math IMO is that the scaling by level is so small, it doesn't allow room for much math at all. It's possible to have a system where characters stay on the RNG even if all the numbers are on a +1 (or greater) per level treadmill, as long as the characters other modifiers don't t...

Alignments could, or could not have mechanical purposes. But, I think if you had a well defined color wheel, having it be mechanical could be fun. I could see a game where you had a 6 color alignment wheel ROYGBP and your color choice unlocked mechanical options for your class. Combine that with a 6...

I think a ROYGBV color wheel would work best.
You can hit 6 different points on the spectrum, and you don't have non-colors like white and black.

Dodge Roll instead of AC? Probably not. How saves are going to work at all still isn't decided. -- Yeah, the plan is for Advanced classes to be able to multiclass too. -- Well, it would be about consistency. Basic classes would have a certain structure that makes them 5 level classes, and becoming l...

You can advance to any advanced class. When you hit level 6, you leave your basic class behind completely, and you get a whole new ability package. This allows you to do lots of cool stuff with your new advanced class, and keeps there from being balance and complexity problems with lower tier classe...

Another DnD Heartbreaker

This is going to be a WIP thread for a "Heartbreaker" I'm working on. It's going to be a DnD-Like that focuses on levels 1-10. Later, 10+ may be developed, but it will require mass combat rules and such. Design Goals: -Ease of play. The game must deliver tactical and roleplaying depth, whi...

The way I see it, The next edition that really succeeds is going to being to a cross between a video game and a TTRPG. The whole game will be within a client. Where you can build your character, build monsters, connect with friends, and play with graphics and action resolutions handled by programmin...

3.X Race Balance

What should the power level of a race in DnD be? How much is too much? How many abilities should a race have? Is it okay to have level 1 thri-kreens running around with 4 attacks at level 1? Is it okay to have things with wings that can fly at first level? Should a race modify stats? Should you pick...

Isn't that how it was in 3e? An equivilent encounter for a party of 4 level 5 characters was 4 CR5 creatures? No, it's one CR5 creature for an even encounter. Which, sucks because fighting one creature is boring, and there's no room to construct interesting encounters. If I want to throw two creatu...

If you're dealing with tiers and non linearity you may have to throw out the CR system and rate monsters on an EL scale only. IE so, 1 marilith might be an EL 10 4 frost giants EL 10 army of orcs EL 10 Within a monster block it could list suggested encounters, so for frost giant Solitary frost gian...

Yeah, what Frank is saying makes perfect sense. I think Schleiermacher was just thinking you meant you couldn't split up that 4 monster building block. If a CR3 encounter for a four person party is 4 Ogres, that is both more interesting. And, the Math allows you to add 2 more Ogres for a 6 person pa...

So, how do the monster classes actually work?

Is it a build-your-own monster where you pick the right features to make the right monster,
or is a package deal, so you would pick Boggle when you're level 1, level up and magically become an Ogre, then level up again and turn into a Yeti?

#1 Duane would start as a Rogue Lurker and pick up Drider abilities built into the Lurker class somehow. But, the catch is, he gets the Multiclass version of the Rogue and the Lurker. Which are written to be "half" the class while still providing level appropriate abilities. Each class wil...

So, instead of Rapidshot, how about something like this: Volley [Combat]: As a full-round attack action, you can fire a ranged attack at a number of targets equal to your base attack bonus + 2. Each target can only be targeted by one attack, and all targets must fit within a cone originating from yo...

3.5e Feats and Races

Google Docs Links: Tome of Incredible Feats and Tome of Fantastic Races They go together as sort of a fix to races and feats. The skill bonuses on the races are based on Kaelik's Skill Groups. Definitely a WIP, but any feedback is appreciated, trying to get this more complete so it can be used in hi...

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I definitely see what you're saying. I'm probably getting a little carried away with the power level and complexity.

Hm, So, I'll go back to the normal levels for tome feats, and probably do away with leadership.

Thanks Rad. Your post has been a great resource in putting my campaign together. Were going to start in the next couple weeks. We decided on Tome feats for odd levels, and PF/3.5e feats for even levels. The players start with a stat array of 18, 16, 16, 14, 14, 12. Then, they're all "Human"...
