Actually, Kindred: the Embraced first aired a year before Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

It's a package of traits with enough memetic traction to provide an implicit template for the character described. Ditto with Elf. Or Italian, for that matter. The idea is that you say that one word, and it brings to mind a package of likely traits for other players to fill in as implicit assumptio...

Maybe for the same reason they want to play a wizard in a fantasy world instead of a guy who is somewhat smart and reads books a lot? Who cares, it's their fantasy. Those are really different things though. A wizard truly can do things that your regular, somewhat smart book-reader can't, like casti...

I'll rephrase in a less cryptic manner. Why do you think people want to play orcs and not just big, ugly and uncivilized people?

It's more polite to exterminate orcs than a foreign group of humans deemed savages I’m not sure that’s a good argument in favor of having orcs as a playable race in a fantasy RPG. Unless, of course, having such a visceral sense of ‘otherness’ was the very purpose for providing the option in the fir...

Yeah, you can write a human barbarian society that fits, and dance around saying "You know, like orcs", but sometimes it's easier to use what is already living in people's heads. I find this assessment to be potentially problematic outside of a narrow, D&D-influenced context. In popul...

Can someone explain to me the rationale behind this presumed psychological motivation for someone demanding to play, say, an orc as opposed to a big, burly human? Or a halfling instead of a short and agile human? If the answer is cultural expectation from mere exposure, I think we need to rethink th...

Regarding Mike Mearls' presumed lack of sexual exploits, perhaps you will find this little factoid illuminating: https://twitter.com/mikemearls/status/4 ... 0916392960

Not that it's a conversation we should be having.

Well, stealth and detection haven't really worked in any edition since you rolled a d6 for random surprise. At least 3.X had rules for sleeping in your steel pyjamas, in case of orcs.

I think I've literally played one session of D&D 5e (could be two sessions, don't remember). I gave up on pretty much the whole when the rules failed to answer the simple question of whether or not I could sleep wearing my armor. My DM was stumped for an answer as well, so I think we reverted to...
