i assume this might be the hero-game you mentioned, ogrebattle. it does contain a seperate terrain deck that can be interacted with in several ways. minions as equipment is also a thing.

it doesn't feature any movement at all though.

WHFB and WH40k are games where the main pleasure aren't the rules, but the models you have in your hands. this is true for every miniature wargame ever made. tabletop wargaming is grown men finding an excuse for playing with toy soldiers. WHFB requires you to use a lot of boring models which are bo...

the earthshaker was arguably the best artillery weapon around for a time. the earthshaking effect meant that melee troops on foot simply could not reach you unless you missfired and even faster troops were severly hindered. and the best part: enemy shooting was greatly reduced and possibly even comp...

seems reasonable. the only question is why did they wait 4 years to copy paizo in doing something like this?

i agree with voss about clunky subsystems. this is the main advantage the mantic "clones" have over gw games imo, they streamlined and simplified a lot, making games play a lot faster and with much less hassle. when i started out playing matic stuff i thought their approach was lacking &qu...

i'm on the board of the largest tabletop gaming club in my country (austria) and aos is effectively nonexistent here. aos didn't reverse or even stop the decline of 8th edition, it completed it. while both kow and 9th age have growing communities, aos has nothing. once or twice a year someone asks f...

do people like this? most people i know do, as it usually adds a bit of suspense. was it just a wandering monster check? are we being ambushed? did we fail to spot a trap? did something important happen behind the scenes (always good when time is an issue)? something is up, but you're not sure what ...

i understand perfectly well. i simply disagree with your interpretation of a text. i'm sure there's much to critique about the *world games. i'm not very excited by much of what i've skimmed today. i doubt i'd like them very much. i have no idea why anyone would feel the need to make stuff up to mak...

that may be the case, but it is not relevant to the example we are talking about or frank's claims. i am only interested in "autoloss on a successfull check" in the example provided. frank is definitely wrong about maps never being used and mobs always being quantum-mobs in *-world games a...

like i said, this is beside the point, my point being that your claim that "a successful roll ended the mission" is not true and that exaggerations like that are not helpful. i doubt you will accept that, but maybe some others guilty of the same behaviour might. :) i'm not arguing that *wo...

even considering that those enemies were not there before (something that could be challenged and not the way i read it, but it's beside the point really)... nothing in the example says that the mission is fucked. "if things go to shit" is obviously far from "things go to shit". ...
