Alignments are objective. Right and wrong are not. Good: Will act to prevent harm to others even at personal cost. Evil: Will seek personal benefit even if it causes harm to others. Law: General, universal, and consistent trump specific, local, and inconsistent. Chaos: Specific, local, and inconsist...

Gotta say, Count, those are 'lifestyle'-leftish things, not politically-leftish.

I grant it's a subtle point and won't insist upon it.

Be accurate. Violent rapes are rarely depicted in the detail that would call for an X rating, and women enjoying consensual sex are easily PG-13 if the details are suggested rather than shown.

We call shitty people on the far left 'Far left'? Count, I doubt you've ever encountered anyone from the far left. But then, some of you seem to think that Trump supporters are "far right", so I suppose it all depends on just how much of your mental field of view your blinders are designe...

It would be more accurate to say that you fail to only attract people who agree with you about everything.

The people who use SJW only ironically are... SJWs.

You deal with Robo-Hannibal-Lecter the same way you deal with Human-Hannibal-Lecter.

More to the point, you induce AIs not to go Lecter-ish the same way humans are induced not to: by having built-in drives that are reinforced by cultural programming.

In all seriousness, consider something like Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, where no one developed near-lightspeed propulsion system because they have 'jump' drives.

Do those limits ever meaningfully affect him? Let's be fair: he clearly states that he doesn't bother acquiring such knowledge because he doesn't use it in the narrow field of endeavor he's interested in - and he thinks there's an opportunity cost involved with storage. (Certainly there IS one with...

Look, just inagine Rey was male. A male Rey would be an even worse character. Unless he was gay and Ren, too. I was going to argue that Rey's being female had a lot to do with why she was given so many features that made her a poor character. And there's something to that line of thinking. But it o...

Are there dark matter currents? What are the effects of changing the momentum of the dark matter?

Is this just a convenient way to handwave the drive systems for spacecraft, or are you interested in exploring the consequences of the postulated world you've defined?

I did not see the original (no, not the one with Nicholsen, the very first) in the theater. But it is delightful and amusing.

It is different from Batman and Robin in every possible way, except that there is a character named 'Batman', a character named 'Robin', and... that's about it, really.

Luke's managing to shoot down the Death Star is wildly unlikely, but it's a single action to fire those torpedoes down that one vent. Rey's somehow managing to hold her own in a lightsaber fight (when she's never had any training or practice) is also wildly unlikely, but it's an extensive and wide-r...

The worst thing he did was turn on a friend and submit to the authorities but he turns and helps them right after. The Empire is, quite literally, holding guns to his head and the heads of all the people he's responsible for. Lando is pretty clearly not a villain or even a bad person. He's shown to...

Business-wise, Solo is a disappointment (and maybe a flop) due largely to poor marketing. And not because people were angry about Last Jedi? Episode IX is going to have to ditch the plan of featuring Leia prominently, even after TLJ spent screen time setting up hooks for that. They *could* re-cast.

Y'know, I can pretty much guarantee that the people in this thread are doing more thinking about the plot of Disney's Star Wars movies than the actual writers did.

They just put stuff in because they thought the audience wanted to see it. That's all.

Luke's targeting skills are, explicitly, superhuman. His piloting isn't. His targeting skills - up to the moment where the Force ghost of Kenobi tells him to turn off the targeting computer aren't. Luke says that he's hit targets of that size before, and no one accuses him of being a liar or reacts...

I said Rey being the most amazingly talented pilot we've seen is inarguable and, of course, it is. Almost, but not quite. Rey displays the most amazingly talented piloting we're ever shown in Star Wars . A subtle but important distinction. Otherwise, you're absolutely right. What's so startling abo...

I think a lot of the problems people have with the mind control scene arise from how it was presented. If she had freaked out and started screaming "Let me go, let me go!" and the stormtrooper had somehow responded, that seems more like someone accidentally learning about a power they didn...

It rather depends on the game system. In D&D and games it inspired, equipment is a fundamental aspect of character development, and being able to make things can easily destabilize things like 'balance', so a whole lot of work is required to ensure that a system doesn't lead to clearly superior ...

I'm afraid history shows that demonstrations of a religion's falsity doesn't lead to believers wising up, but rather doubling down on their belief.
