A character in a JRPG can plausibly have "hard to kill" as their primary combat schtick, where they do nothing but make standard attacks Certain JRPGs also have other gimmicks In your typical jrpg, the " mundane fighter"'s auto-attack Would it be safe to assume, given these answ...

You could roll nothing but ones and you're still doing 88% of your average damage. So in JRPGs, in my experience, a given character's damage output is relatively stable - there is some amount of variation, but not a lot, for a given set of level/gear/whatever. Ignoring the precise math at play, why...

You seem to be hinting at the idea that, as the party's position on the great chain of being rises, their relative chances of succeeding at level-appropriate tasks should change. If that's what you're trying to get at, can you make your position more explicit? Explicitly and specifically in the cas...

Do we consider a level 1 anything to be a "competent specialist"? Relative to other level 1 characters attempting a challenge appropriate to a level 1 character: certainly. Compared to characters attempting a challenge appropriate to a level 20 character: certainly not. You might think th...

What did disappoint and anger me though ist that awful Discovery system. Apparently Pathfinder wan't complex enough and also needed more MMO mechanics, so now you can add a new meta-currency point system where PCs accumulate Discovery points by finding way signs and beating stupid skill checks. Tho...

The pool of talent doing tabletop RPG stuff is just really weak nowadays (with very little new blood). This is a cultural thing, I think, on the part of the gaming companies themselves. I applied for a job at WotC years ago, and actually got pretty far along. It was early in 4e, though, and I was s...

"Alphabet" is, at this point, an acknowledged linguistics term, used to describe a particular type of writing system.

According to momothefiddler in this thread (http://www.tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?p=476483), the 5E DMG does contain a lot of optional rules that at least approximate the "modular experience" claim of pre-release. The way I recall it, we were pretty much told that Bob could sit down and make...

Maybe play off the theme of each tribe, and use that to put extra details in their region that are also interesting bits to explore? For instance, "orcs who worship fire" might do so because their tribe is sitting on top of the ruins of a temple to some forgotten fire deity, so they get po...

A better model is the spell model of progression. Not surprising since casters are known to be more fun and playable. You get level gated abilities each level which don't require prerequisites and require actions and slots (which cuts ways down on synergy problems). Giving everyone their own full s...

Maybe I'm just tired, but I don't follow what you mean; in general it seems pretty clear to me when you're able to take 10 or not.

Do you want to try clarifying what you meant?
