Re: Ignoring things that ignore the ignoring of...

So I think most effects that grant immunity to <thing> currently would work better as "First ignore X points of flat damage then half the rest". Also, as a separate concept, some creatures should have a "treat <thing> damage as non-lethal" Special Quality. So fire elementals cou...

Re: [d20 Patch] Dirty Dungeons

Why?

Why not?

I joke. My design plan was an experiment based on something Frank wrote years ago when he said "I don't want to play an RPG that is just a series of coin tosses", which got me thinking, what would that look like anyway?

Re: [d20 Patch] Dirty Dungeons

This is version 2... Dirty Dungeons v2 I thought up an easy RPG fix for d20 using games. 50% hit rate and save throws This mean TN 11+ on a plain d20, no bonuses on accuracy allowed ODDS OF SUCCESS Excellent (reroll two failures) Good (reroll one failure) Average (pass on a roll of 11 or higher, 19 ...

So, what about increasing the TN to 11 so that there's more room for up/down?

Re: [d20 Patch] Dirty Dungeons

I stuck with d20s because D&D players typically expect that, but good point on the d4s.

The only reason I didn't go with d4s is that they suck, and I mean absolutely worst, geometric design.
Hard to randomize.
Hard to pick up from the table.

Re: Why are Tome Feats a problem?

They're not a problem. The auto-scaling was though.

Over the years there's been a general consensus to do two things:

1. A bonus feat per level for everyone.
2. Require that each Tome feat be split into portions, each portion a different feat unto itself.

The class specialization and feats that allow dabbling cut down on variant classes, which is good but still not great.

Re: 5E: Summons still suck

I've been doing pet classes as part of my approach to my 5e homebrew. Here are a couple examples: Summoner , Gestalt . I'm not sure how well either of those contribute to the discussion, but I think they hit on some points that have been brought up, and might be useful fodder for "this is reas...

Re: 5E: Summons still suck

Everything has to have a cost, be it magic energy, a pact with the summon or hireling, or gold.

But ultimately all in-combat uses should rely on the action economy.

Re: 5E: Summons still suck

One would assume that a system capable of letting players control NPCs would make a distinction between mundane mercenaries you buy at an inn versus summoning demons from the hell versus conjuring 50 sentient flying daggers. Thematic difference, different abilities, but should use the same rules an...

Re: 5E: Summons still suck

Don't forget one-shot summons like FF style. Big AOE for one turn, with or without debuffs. I'm not sure FF is a good example - the "summons" there are not game mechanically summons in the D&D sense for the most part. Sure the flavour is that an otherworldly being shows up and perform...

Hmmm...as a sorta cop out, could you have summons work as a buff? Possibly with their own HP so fighters can sword the buff away which makes them different from other buffs.
On turns the summon isn't used to attack they could stay close for shielding.
