Perhaps some of the craftier sorts of monsters, like Icarids, can create transferrable phylacteries, so many a month based on Edge rather than power schedule. The rest I can understand; and mostly agree with; but... I simply am having difficulty grokking this. I never was aware that Icarids are cra...

The non-gold currency could be based on a monster's time, sort of like how a Magus can only extract so many vis as a season of lab work. Perhaps some of the craftier sorts of monsters, like Icarids, can create transferrable phylacteries, so many a month based on Edge rather than power schedule. Kitt...

Tenra Bansho Zero has a good distribution of archetypes. While it has its share of basket weaving, the concepts it supports with actual phlebotinum are: * Samurai * Ninja * Cyborgs (in this setting hihi-irokane "red steel" is used to make magitech) * Giant robots(the souls of Buddhist-styl...

Maybe you loop back around to the top, like how in older Final Fantasy games you were on a flat, looping plane instead of a sphere, except with up and down working like that too.

Maybe cosmic forces don't need to be polar opposites, like how cold can go down to absolute zero, but heat is just energy and if you have too much of it you can always make another star or something. Like, absolute evil/chaos exists, like Chaos in Amber/Moorcock, but there is no Ultimate Good, just ...

Aside from the withering/decisive split, another big change is that Perfects have a per-encounter limit on how many times you can use them, that goes up as you buy more charms. This makes a lot of the combat game trying to guess at how many times your opponent is going to be able to Perfect, based o...

Since its going to be MTP anyway, I prefer the Feng Shui method, where you simply have a blank to write in something like "Star pupil of the Guild of Assassins". Moreover, that system doesn't allow the GM to reach over the table, cross it out, and write in something more relevant to the fa...

Ditching skills does sound like something I've wanted out of systems in the past. Having Batman whip out a hacking device he created by studying a Reach Scarab from his variable power toolbelt, instead of making a Hacking roll because he's super smart and knows every skill, for example. I suppose it...

I'm attempting a system at the moment where stats don't directly affect skills. Primarily because I want to make a slife-of-life game where basketweaving self-actualization is important, and the friend I talk to about game design mentions often the importance of being able to specialize in, say, pla...

I played a bunch of the 40k FFG RPGs as my introduction to the hobby. They have all the same mechanical problems as CoC (to a lesser degree, but its still not a very good competency simulator), but we managed to do cooperative storytelling in the given universe anyway, likely because of the setting....

I die plenty in Metal Gear Rising, and that's one of the most weeaboo games that ever weeabooed. And most people have at least one death anecdote to tell about D&D. Fantasizing about power != demanding to be coddled. EDIT: Missed dean's post. Yeah, good idea not to perpetuate this. Original pos...

Games are about making meaningful choices. The more power you have, the more meaning your choices have, so some games increase your power to create choice. D&D, for example, gives you magical abilities and martial arete in order to make it a game of choices, and not a fleeing from kobolds simula...

I can't speak for the Japanese TTRPG scene, but Tenra Bansho Zero works in a similar way. You have a 3 act scenario structure, broken into scenes, and "scene" and "act" and "intermission" are all mechanically distinct. You have a metagame currency called "aiki"...

My group loves Tenra Bansho Zero so they're likely to enjoy this.

Scenario play IS tricky for westerners, but doing a better job of translating the GM advice than TBZ would help there. Either that, or provide a big pile of prewritten ones like Maid.

Even in a game like Crusader Kings, where having sex furthers your goal of taking over Europe through multiple generations, there's things keeping it from becoming the RaHoWa of rape. For one, you can't cast Charm Person. In addition, the ideal mates often have similar political leverage to yourself...

The idea that you can run any setting with any game as long as your players play it in good faith. This results in people frequently pushing games on you that are inappropriate for what you want, like Savage Worlds for campaign play, FATE for having a meaningful tactics minigame, or Apocalypse World...
