Uh, it sounds like he wants actual powers from his music, like he's a "blood shaman bard" or something. Has this guy ever played before? Have you maybe suggested that the early parts of his career could be backstory that he has retrained out of so he doesn't suck a barrel of cocks as a cha...

Well people like races in their fantasy. There are very few successful fantasy games that feature only humans, so there's a reason to include races right there.

But low/no-optimization play isn't balanced. Casters rule, martials drool is still true even when your players don't know how to build either - they're just not going to notice. Naw dawg, no optimization is even worse than you think it is. Just writing "grease" instead of "magic miss...

Side question: where in the rules does it say you can ever suppress your spell resistance against a spell that isn't designated harmless? The terms “object” and “harmless” mean the same thing for spell resistance as they do for saving throws. A creature with spell resistance must voluntarily lower ...

Is this just to piss in Mistborn's cereal? You even have tiers and everything, set up in the "correct way" that everyone criticized him for not doing.

Man this is a stupid argument. Your DM is going to allow you to accept the cure light wounds and save against the finger of death while you're unconscious without even spending the time to look up these rules that we still can't even agree on. That's just what is going to happen, unless your DM is a...

If you're writing a new spell list why are Planar Binding and Wish still in the game? Why not just take those effects behind the woodshed and blow their brains out? It's not like those effects have to exist and simply not including them is the easier path. Because quite aside from the legendary abu...

If hogarth wasn't talking about proportional change, I have no idea what he could have been talking about instead. What is "A 10% increase in the amount of healing or resurrection you need" if it isn't a proportional change? He was talking about the bit where, when you actually throw down...

An increase from 75% to 85% is 10 percentile points and a (85 - 75)/75 * 100% = 13.333...% proportional increase. Similarly, the rest of Sergarr's math is also right. Don't get smug and accuse people of being amazingly wrong on simple math when you're not even aware of the fact that "proportio...

Uh, no. +2 to resistance rolls can mean vastly different things in different circumstances. Let's see three different typical situations here: 1) A resistance roll is kinda easy (5+ to save, 75/25). In this case, +2 to the roll means making a save on 3+, which is a 13% increase in chances to succes...

Anime Archetypes

So I've been thinking recently about what classes and what kind of resource systems different anime archetypes would have in a tabletop system. What kinds of things do people like to see? I'm an anime fan but I definitely have my own preferred genres and stories so I don't think I can do everything ...

Magic of Incarnum is the only implementation of a good resource management mechanic that is under used even in most computer RPGs, much less in Table Top. So even though it is a terrible implementation, and the actual abilities are total shit, and the fluff is garbage flavored garbage, people who a...

The end of the paragraph above the one you quoted should be very insightful as to why you're wasting everyone's fucking time. I get that you are Rainman levels of autist. Roll under is a nice idea, but it fails horribly IMO at opposed actions. Roll under systems are actually shit. There is no benefit to using roll under in a d100 system when you could just roll the die, add your bonus and compare it to a target number of 100. Not only does this make circumstantial b...

A little late to the "goblin ears" conversation, but this was not something weird or unique in Dungeons and Dragons. Keep in mind that even in the Baldur's Gate video game, one of the NPCs offered to pay you for each bandit scalp you brought to her. She was an officer of essentially the ci...

From what I recall The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen- commonly called Munchausen for short- is the best designed rules-light system. It's literally just a prompt for telling a story with mechanical interaction from the other players. If you want a narrative RPG, that's your bag.

Big Skills

So the trend among Dungeons and Dragons editions has been consolidating skills into larger, more meaningful chunks and giving less skill points to spend around. I'm pretty on board with these changes for the most part. Generally, a person wants a character they are playing to be good at a broad list...

Boss monsters and mooks aren't difficult. As suggested, mooks can share powers and act in concert (which is a better system than having them act individually anyway) and bosses obviously have a full suite of abilities that you'd want to put together. The problems come from "mirror matches."...
