Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
I don't play Tome. But it was definitely an influence. We have 4 martial classes, 3 of which use bonus dice mechanics and have different requirements to get their dice. We have a Rogue which you're familiar with; we have a Knight that designates a foe and gets damage dice and other benefits, and we ...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
I fundamentally disagree. Rage dice and Sneak Attack dice are sufficiently distinct from both a player perspective (which is most important) and from a character perspective (which only matters when either is a member of the opposition). It actually does matter if your extra dice come from flanking ...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
"Oh my god did you just see the raw damage that guy dealt with a sword hit he must be a... never mind that doesn't really narrow it down." IS a Class System failing to do one of the main things they exist for. That's at most a failure of descriptive elements. If you as a player and your c...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
I'd take classes that blend together to be a repudiation of PL's contention that classes must be distinct . For anyone that wants to join me in my archival investigation, Feat chains rob people has a fair bit of discussion of class versus point based starting half-way down the first page and continu...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
Apologies for the double-post, but didn't want this to get lost in a response to Phonelobster. The distinction between "class-based" and "point-based" is more confusing than helpful I think. Depending on how the character creation rules are written, all sorts of different things ...

(Btw, the most likely answer for Hasmaski's parent can be found on the Titannica wikia. Next time we're asked something about FF/Titan lore, it would probably pay to research a bit before answering.) There are certainly some things that we'll learn by playing through many games and it could be argu...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
The benefit of a class system is that characters invest in the ability that they want No it isn't. What I said isn't crazy. A player may want an ability, but a character ALSO wants an ability. They're expected to adventure in the world and they want to be good at what they do and they want to survi...

Re: [Let's Play] Fighting Fantasy 70 – Secrets of Salamonis
Might as well inspect the scene of the attack. I was a little afraid we might also be attacked there, but I think we'll have to track them back to the silver mine. I'm curious to see how Clue Points work - is solving the mystery simply a matter of accumulating enough of them? Or maybe we're not solv...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
The benefit of a class system is that characters invest in the ability that they want (say rage) and they get a bunch of abilities that they wouldn't have selected 'for free (like saving throw bonuses, skills, etc). In a point based system you can sacrifice defenses for more of or more powerful atta...

Re: Can Prestige Classes Be Salvaged?
There's a lot of things you identified as a problem, and a few more that you didn't (though many are solved by tome classplosion). Sometimes a class offers an ability that seems critical to a concept (like not provoking AoO using a ranged weapon which was originally only available through the Order ...

Re: [Let's Play] Fighting Fantasy 70 – Secrets of Salamonis
Solving a mystery seems the least likely to get us killed or to require abilities we haven't yet advanced. I recommend 203.

Re: [Let's Play] Fighting Fantasy 70 – Secrets of Salamonis
We have 5 Amonour so we can raise our stats by a total of +2. I think that we will get the most benefit by raising Skill, so I suggest we spend 4 points to raise Skill by +2. We only have 2 Gold Pieces left, but starting a fight with the IRS seems like a fight we could lose badly. If we're going to ...

Re: Kaelik Fighter
I don't think 120 damage is RNG breaking at 17th level. +6 damage is not level appropriate at 16th level. I mean, if you compare this to a 3.5 Fighter at 17th level it's clearly better. But to a Cleric Archer? Edit - Still not understanding whether changing froma 6 to a 1 has an impact on a save you...

Re: Kaelik Fighter
I feel like the break between getting +6 to damage (level 1 to 16) and getting +120 to damage is very extreme (level 17). Stay in the Fight is weird before you get Improved Yahtzee (level 20); if you give yourself a +6 bonus to saves you can be affected for 18 rounds; but if you put a +1 bonus in sa...

I'm always in favor of asking for advice even if I decide not to take it. He's got a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye - maybe his advice is good. Let's hear what he has to say.
