Re: Chronicle of the Basement Transformation

So, the pandemic kind of put its own twist on things. Having usable space in the basement became a necessity, so "creating an awesome basement in a few years" got preempted by "I need a livable basement NOW''. So I did the quick fix to the insulation (i.e stuck EPS panels where they'd...

Well, it's stated on the show that the civilians caught in the big mindfuck are suffering something horrifying. So there's definitely a villain involved, even if it's Wanda. It'd be refreshing if it turned out to be the case, honestly. But I fully expect Wanda will be shown to be an unwilling dupe/v...

Yeah, the "sitcoms throughout the ages" theme is really too prevalent, or maybe not enough. IMO it would have worked better as a 1:1 between Westview and Outside Westview, or go all in and have the actual "WTF is happening" investigation happening inside the sitcom world entirely...

For what it's worth, there are some wasp-killing products that can shoot that 20' range straight out of the can. I used that once and it worked fine - any wasp you kill beforehand is one that can't escape your sack.

Actually, the basement is insulated to Seventies standards: EPS panels stuck to the wall to a depth of four feet below grade. They had to tear parts out when they fixed the cracks in the foundation, so that's why we don't see it on the photos. I'm planning on doing a quick fix for that this fall whe...

We Got Roofed The roof, the roof, the roof is replaced. By which I mean the shingles, the waterproof underlayer, the damaged plywood below, the various air and plumbing vents, and the clown-quality ducting done by my nemesis, the previous owner's brother-in-law. Thankfully, we didn't run into any n...

While I think attracting new blood is necessary (if only to combat attrition), I really don't think we need/want to be Yet Another Gaming Forum. I'm fine not reading tens of cookie-cutter "my DM is a dick"/"my players keep derailing my Cool Story (TM)" threads a week.

Kind of my feeling as well. Like, there's probably room for a D&D-adjacent business boardgame that could even integrate to some extent with the base game as an optional module. But it's definitely something that should only be put in place with everyone's buy in, and/or run separately from the m...

The Yearly-or-So Update: Remember this cool project? Yeah, it's still moving forward at a snail's pace. We fixed the garage floor and foundation last December, a high-ticket item. We also had to redo one bathroom due to a leak (yet another case of the previous owner's brother-in-law fucking up - a ...

The one issue I can see with keeping the news discussions is that it'll inevitably drag in the political content. Like, coronavirus shouldn't be a political issue, but it is, and it is the major news topic at the moment. And then you're right back to splitting hairs over what's acceptable or not. Ma...

IMO, we need a "no politics, period" rule, at least for now. And zero tolerance on sneaking in politics in other subjects. I kind of think a MPSIMS forum is nice for community building, but right now it's one or two new topics per month (which is fine), some media discussion (fine also), a...

And the daycare workers are actually on paid leave as well since they've closed all the daycare centers (except for those kept open to offer services to health care and other essential workers). The government actually runs the bigger part of our child-care networ...

Well, this is weird. I've just been sent home (with full pay and benefits) by my employer. Technically I should be working from home but my job flat-out doesn't work that way so thank to the magic of strong unions and permanent positions, I'm supposed to "stay available" instead. Given tha...

Addendum to Chapter 2: The Upbeat Version You know what? I've actually made some visible progress this summer. It's not much, but it's actual work I did myself so I get to talk about it. Basically, I have a bunch of shrubs/small trees planted near the foundation around the house. They have to go (a...

Chapter 2: It Would Be Cliché To Call It The Best Laid Plans Well, it's been a busy summer. Our second son was born in February, and we've been in and out of the hospital with respiratory issues until mid-June. No long-term consequences, fortunately, but it was stressful and demanding. But what act...

Chapter 1: The Purging of the Carpet It is done. The toxic beige carpet has been exiled from the basement. As expected, ripping it off was easy. Getting rid of the underlayer was the tough part. https://i.postimg.cc/tJx1cyMp/first-quarter.jpg To the right: a mostly-cleaned out section. The black ba...

A foundation drain excavation is not the right time to learn how to use an excavator (unless you really hate your house and your water pipes), and deep trenches need to be dug right (unless you really hate the people who are going to be working at the bottom.) That's why I don't think it's a DIY pro...
