You know the caricature about the role players being fat guys who don't know what "sport" means. Is it really a caricature? In Pathfinder 2, a PC who makes a 11-minute-jogging is fatigued for the rest of the day; after 21 minutes he's exhausted. In other words, the designers literally thin...

The idea of splitting move and standard actions up into discrete non-fungible actions that could be spent differently was a conscious choice and a genuine advance over gaming systems of the previous century. If you want to roll it back, you gotta tell me why . Because I played D&D when moving c...

On the paizo's messageobard there's a subject about ambush. The situation described is: "a bunch of kobolds sets an ambush to the PCs". I think this is the kind of common situation that should be easily resolved by the system (at least for a D&D-like rpg); if the system has problem wit...

No no no. Don't change the subject here. Actions in D&D are already overly complicated and you already have to track too much shit round-to-round. Who the fuck thinks it would be a good idea to increase the QUANTITY of available round-by-round options by at least an order of magnitude? I think ...

[...] and besides being allowed to roll perception or to recall knowledge (knowledge skills) [...] Side note: this "or" is actually a "xor"; you can't roll perception and recall knowledge at the same time. One character is supposed to look around if there's something unusual, bu...

The overall consensus is the alchemist sucks and you shouldn't play it - but you may use their multiclass feats (ie, you can play fighter/alchemist or wizard/alchemist). This consensus comes from the Paizils themselves on the official Paizo board . If even paizil can agree on this, this means the cl...

There's an activity called " follow the expert ", allowing an unskilled character to watch how the expert does (and get huge bonus to his roll). This is a good thing, now a good climber can make other characters good at climbing by showing them how to do. The book use Stealth as an example...

The three action economy doesn't really solve any problems and doesn't scale. So I guess it's history lesson time. Ultimately warriors in D&D have been getting extra attacks since the 1970s because even with belts of giant strength and vorpal blades the swinging of a sword does not keep up with...

I can see how the parry triggering an AoO could be missed. Parry to interact action, interact action to manipulate trait, manipulate to AoO - that's three degrees of separation. And most enemies can't do AoOs now remember, so the details of them may escape some writers. Good editing would be needed...

I have to say it's hard reading through this. I don't think it's written for most people. Lawyers or people on the autistic spectrum, maybe. Text of laws are complicated because they want to be as unambiguous as possible. Pathfinder is complicated for the sake of being complicated. ... Or maybe it'...

I never noticed that the penalty damage for ignoring a mark isn't as much as a striker's damage. That's hilarious. That's awful. The mark doesn't penalize damage, it is a -2 penalty on attack rolls. Still awful, though. It's a bit more complicated than that. Every Defender has a way to mark opponen...

So we can compute: every level, a character gains +1/2 +1.5/10 +1/5 +1/10 = +0.95 to hit (or AC or defense or whatever). This is not equal to +1. At level 20, you're 1 point behind. So: You fall behind the monsters. I don't know how they can have missed this, this is really simple math. You need th...

Completely related is the weird conflation with "Only Need X" to "Need Only X". So Andy Collins said they only needed to have 8 classes in the PHB. And while that was wrong , you can follow the logic. 2e AD&D launched with 8 classes, so you could make an argument that that w...

I remember it caps at -10 AC Not really. -10 is the AC you get with the best armor (+5 full plate) and the best shield (+5 shield). Then you can subtract the Dex AC bonus, some item bonus like a ring of protection, etc, for a total AC far below -10. so there was this 1-out-of-20 chance for a L1 War...

Neither of those is an improvement, either. It seems the exploration rules prevents you from carrying your weapon in your hand while l...

Wait, a fucking potion takes 2 actions? Potions in most games already seem like they're of dubious value with 1 action. When you can heal for 0 gold with a spell, or take more than zero gold and also twice as many actions, and also can only affect yourself... One action to "wield it" and ...

Kingmaker seeks to solve your established problem by preventing you from travelling too much. There's a time limit and the problems won't wait for you to make ten trips from dungeon to home. OK, so in this case it can work. This is similar to the Grandia example: your party has to settle the camp i...

Again. What the fuck were were expecting? 3 things: 1/ Paizo has made only poor system until now, but until now they were constrained by the 3.5 framework. if they don't like it, maybe they could do something good by starting from scratch without any 3.5 heritage? 2/ Even a broken clock is right tw...
