So if the game is lethal and the PCs are supposed to run away sometimes, how can they assess the challenges in this game? Trial and error I guess. It would have to be that because the rules emphasize monster "uniqueness", meaning you should not really know what it is you are fighting. The...

And yes there is no CR, the only thing to go on is HD. The rules even say to let the characters figure out when to fight and when to run by experience. I personally do not like the idea that the party should be able to defeat anything they run across. There should be times to run. How the fuck does...

I don't know what to tell you. I think it's odd that you went from "I think your luck score is the only thing that can mitigate many "you're dead, no save" effects" to "I like that the stats are less essential than in 3.5". To me, those statements seem contradictory. B...

I have to admit that the idea that by default you cannot min/max is appealing. And I like that the stats are less essential than in 3.5. And that NO magic items are 'expected'. I have no idea how you make the leap from "X is rare" to "X is less necessary". They are two different...

Has anyone here actually played this game? I started a play-by-post game with the beta rules, but we never got beyond the character creation stage, which was kind of fun in a dumb way. I had a peasant with a cart full of straw, a hunter with a shortbow and a mirror, and an elf with a pound of clay....

Does the DCC game lose some of its "Gygax-death-no-save" aspect at higher levels? I think some of the higher end of the spell effects are very potent, and I haven't read most of the spells, but it is possible it's still in there. The highest level is 10th and the highest level spells are ...

This is all true. You WILL die. Especially early in your career. But so what, too many players since 3rd Ed have become pussies who think their characters should never die. It's part of the game. If there's no risk of death, it's not as fun. And from the looks of the crit tables, high level characte...

This RPG says that it aims to be in the vein of Appendix N. You know the fabled list that Gygax put in the 1st Ed DMG. It is full of crit and fumble tables, luck effects, varying spell effects, corruption for failing at spell-casting, lots of save-or-die effects, no rules for treasure as it shouldn'...

Opinions on the new DCC RPG?

Any thoughts on this yet? I downloaded the PDF to check it out. It has some fail from some ancient D&D DNA, like races as classes, but it also mashes in some 3rd ed stuff like the three saves. And no Vancian casting. Add to this the 0 level start with a pool of characters ala old Dark Sun. The g...

If casters have save or dies, I think that melee's should get save or dies too. And I don't mean death from massive damage.

Go into Shadowcraft Mage if gnome. It gives you all conjuration (creation), conjuration (summoning), and evocation spells off the Sorc/Wizard list. In a weird way, but still. Versatility. Take Arcane Preparation and Circle Magic and go into Mage of the Arcane Order to get any kind of Sorc/Wizard sp...

If PHB2 is available, you could probably just play a Beguiler, tell people you're a Bard, and just never worry about Bardic Music. I took this suggestion, thanks. I'm needing to cover the rogue stuff and Beguiler is pretty decent at this. I do need to branch out from just illusion/enchantment spell...

What is the Den's opinion on the 3.5 bard BTW?

I'm going to be in an urban setting game and the flavor of my character was drug addicted alchemist but I have no idea how to best fit that into 3.5 DnD (starting at 1st level).

I started with the original Red Box Basic Set. The Expert Set. Then went to ADnD. Those were the only RPGs that I knew existed. Then my group wanted more realistic combat so we switched to Runequest. Then I took about a 2 decade break, then started back in on 3.5 Ed. 3.4 was the first time I ever us...

It's silly to say that 3.x allows characters to "break plot" more than any other system. Just because they have actual options? A good MC can always improvise and keep things moving forward.

I personally did not like the Kingmaker Adventure Path. The concept was okay, but the encounters and adventures were weak IMO. The minigame of empire building was also not very good. I liked Savage Tide, Rise of the Runelords, and Crimson Throne better.

Dragons should be totally badassed IMHO. But I grew up reading Tolkien, where dragons destroyed entire cities and civilizations. To me they are campaign climax type bosses and without planning and tactics, PCs would have little chance of winning.

YMMV

As far as I'm concerned, Pathfinder is only good for fluff, adventures, and reprinting monster manuals. Given how easy their adventures are I'm not so sure about one of those. I've heard that their adventures were actually on the difficult side. Perhaps not for hard-core optimizers. I own quite a f...

I don't believe in robbing players of iterative attacks if they roll a one. Uh... How does that relate to my thing? The player can totally keep rolling iterative attacks after a 1, and is, in fact, encouraged to do so, because if a subsequent attack roll isn't a 1, then the enemy no longer gains th...

No, there's a difference. My idea doesn't punish people for making extra attacks, and indeed rewards extra attacks, even pathetic ones at -15, because they give you more opportunities to roll something that's not a 1 and then stop. I played in one campaign where just because the MC bought a critica...

I don't want to have to make up the descriptions myself, because I could always describe my attacks as hitting them in the face. I find the bolded part to be most probably the most important part of your post. I figured someone would jump on that comment. I definitely see your points, but I find th...
