Okay that's not exactly fair. 4E has plenty of issues too. But IMO 5E simply has the problem of not being very well thought-out. It seems like they were too busy trying to make it 'feel like D&D' that they forgot to make it mechanically sound.

Do you honestly think that DMs are grabbing a MM and reading a new entry during a game to discover the random stat line and random and unique snowflake abilities for a new monster? Is that honestly easier than using a stat line you've seen a hundred times and abilities you know because the show up ...

There are plenty of ambitious RPGs in development or already released. Apocalypse World/Dungeon World, 13th Age, hell even D&D Next: it has lofty ambitions, to unite a fractured fanbase. It's not doing a good job of that, but you'd be hard pressed to find a team that could. Hell, even Fourth Edi...

No, 3E is not the best D&D we will ever have. It's not even the best D&D we currently have. Don't be an idiot because of nostalgia.

NB: I continue to be correct. The police did not exist in the settings for D&D, and having them exist is bad for your game because it strongly interferes with the setting assumptions required for adventure (and as Frank said, is boring). Feel free to build another hilarious strawman out of that...

overall class balance is at an acceptable place at the moment, Is that really the case? Last I heard of 4e there were awesome classes and terrible classes you should never pick. The seeker being a terrible one for example. Yeah, its not perfectly balanced by any stretch. The Ranger is far and above...

This seems familiar. Oh yeah this is what 4e totally did. And we see how well that worked out. Actually quite well for the most part! Yeah, it took them until MM3 to get the monsters right but overall class and monster balance is at an acceptable place at the moment, which is far more than you can ...

I like the way some Fighter and Warlord exploits handle it: some powers have extra riders depending on the weapon. Not nearly enough has been done with it, IMO. So, just for an example, you know how to do Whirlwind Attack. But lots of fighters took that feat. What differentiates them (in this case) ...

4E has quite a few powers that can be used as an "Immediate Reaction" or "Immediate Interrupt" so you might look at those for ideas. Generally speaking they're Encounter or Daily powers or only usable against marked opponents. Though personally I'm not a huge fan of them, as they...

Lesson: Sometimes there's a dangerous place where people simply do not go. You might be a hero, but some of those places apply to you as well. Run your games with a much wider range of difficulties available to players and let them decide what is level-appropriate and what isn't. While in broad str...

Why would you walk into a mess hall full of guards? You seriously cannot imagine any possibility where our hero accidentally walks into a room full of bad guys? None whatsoever? Of course I can, but not as the result of a partial success on a roll to sneak. That's something you'd think would happen...

Why would you walk into a mess hall full of guards? What do you mean by 'use that logic to justify it'? A mess hall full of guards is not a quiet or subtle thing. And if there's a mess hall full of guards, and they have to be sneaked around to get to your goal, you shouldn't be relying on absurdly g...

The idea of BAB and BSB is inherently flawed, but overall the idea could work quite well. Instead of giving each class arbitrary bonuses to attack and spell casting, I'd assign each class flat +5 to attacks made with their primary stat, a +3 to attacks made with the secondary stat, and a +1 to attac...

Dungeon World (relatively fast next to D&D at least) 13th Age (Not exactly simple but less complicated than 3.X or 4E D&D) I've heard praise of Warrior Rogue & Mage, though never had a chance to play it myself. Gamma World (the current edition) plays like a drastically simplified D&D

Sadly the campaign fizzled out. The Rogue and Warlock continued to miss sessions. I was looking forward to the confrontation, too.

[D&D] We tricked Death into thinking we were Dead

This happened in a D&D game I joined last year: The game is based on Castlevania, specifically taking place parallel to the events of Symphony of the Night. We’re a group comprised of three first responders to Dracula’s advances, and two demon ambassadors from hell sent to put Dracula on notice ...

Honestly, Paragon is where the game should stop. High level D&D breaks down not just because the math gets borked, but because it is conceptually hard to tell stories when the protagonists have the kind of abilities that level 8 or 9 spells give you. And they certainly don't fit well in a syste...
