BTW, "Greyhawking" for those not interested in looking it up like I did, is what it sounds like based on the context here. Loot all the things. Unless I'm mistaken it's based on the idea that every item has a value, and the way to get rich is to be a party of Katamari Damacy-like powergame...

if a kobold is carrying a sword and wearing bark armor, then the treasure is the sword and bark armor from that kobold. that is the only way it works. the kobold doesnt turn into a vial of kobold blood upon death! if you are hungry then the kobold flesh is also treasure, but i suggest lots of spice...

There are settings and campaigns where mass combat does fit and needs to be handled somehow, but that really has nothing to do with D&D. The same could be said for gambling with cards - sometimes it fits the game you're playing but it doesn't need to interact with the rules. Handwave the thing a...

Shadzar, you wouldn't be such an ignorant troll if you'd learn some basic reading comprehension. For example I say, "Concerning prices, let's look at Taco Bell. They price their drink at $1.99. That is an example of how a company can price something just under the whole dollar amount to trick p...

stop trying to make Drizzt-clones and your own story for them, and play the game! As often as you say this, it should just be your signature. Never mind that it has literally nothing to do with the post to which you were replying, or that in the light of the last 20 years of fiction Drizzt measures...

A setting in which I've wanted to set a game for a while is in the universe of Gene Wolfe's Solar Cycle. Specifically in Ushas, a not-too-distant time after the final events recorded in the coda to his Book of the New Sun tetralogy. If you haven't read it, you should. It's better than good. But the ...

Each item order would have force behind it because it would be made during the cooperative worldbuilding stage with metagame currency.... Cooperative world building steps take time, and that is time you aren't spending telling stories of adventure. Cooperative world building steps with accounting t...

Grek's Ideal System: If you're doing it like that, wouldn't it be simpler to skip the looting process altogether? Let's say you adopt a wealth point system like in Exalted and others. It's a value attributed to the group and it starts low. You get starting gear. After a "milestone" of pot...

The best co-op board game I've ever played is Atlantis Rising . Each character you can play as has such a different role that after playing a couple of times you know exactly what your role is going to be based on which one you choose. It's exciting, suspenseful, and really hard. It involves a ton o...

The main thing that bothers me about Conan is the world is so darn dumb . It would be great to have so many cultures... if you didn't know enough about real world cultures to realize he didn't really invent anything so much as remake the stuff he knew with playdough. The maps being used are based on...

I've been thinking that all Magic Items should be basically Artifacts as D&D defines them. Specific named items with histories and unique powers that show up rarely and are made a big deal of when they do. I was heading the same direction, but assuming you run D&D the way the books tell you...

Ideal Loot: I'm not going to pretend this is the best way to handle loot and gear, since I don't truck with superlatives, but this is the philosophy I'm using currently in a D&D-like game. You know how you treat non-magical gear? Most magical gear should be treated like that. In fact, most magi...

Make items feel powerful and have high impact but Allow players to function without items. I could totally give some 1st level dude a Frost Brand and while they're a lot better at killing goblins, it's in no way a requirement to have it to be able to kill goblins. Functioning without items is not t...

I hate this thread because in order to keep up I had to read Shadzar posts. sigh But it's a topic I care about. Just to be different, here are some experiences and what they taught me. 1. I played in a low-magic 3e D&D game where the GM asked us what we wanted. He didn't need the added effort of...

Well, those 11 people were playing it very differently than I or the people I have played it with do. We usually do have a Game Master who sets the world, and each player has a Wizard, a Companion, and several grogs they are responsible for. We also used to pair off, so that 1 player would play all...

I'd pay an obscene amount for a good Star Wars RPG, but as far as I know such a thing never existed. By far the best Star Wars game I've ever played was one that used Mutants & Masterminds. We played Jedi with non-Jedi sidekicks and it was quite good. I'd share the conversion document if I stil...

Re: If you had your druthers, what would you play right now?

I'd want to run a Zombie Apocalypse game, though I can already do that, wonder if one would be improved by better ability to differentiate characters, like unique archtype abilities? If nothing else, think such a game would be massively improved by having bunch of random tables for finding stuff in...

RIFTS with Kevin Siembieda. He is basically the only person who can run it in the way it was intended to be run. Nowadays I have more fun designing than playing RPG's heh, so my fistfull of Druthers would be having Frank Trollman's undivided attention for X amount of time to get my heartbreaker fin...

I'll go, even though it's been so long since I've had any druthers I'm not sure what to do with them. Of the games I've played, none really seem good when it comes to rules. To be honest, that why I asked this question. If someone said, "What is an example of a good rpg system?" my answer ...

And yet I could make a longer list of the things it could have if it were Christianity-themed, but doesn't, some being glaring omissions. And if you made a list of the things it has that could be a reference to your pick of religions, beliefs, cultures, whatever, it might be just as long. Look, I'm ...
